At last night's City Council meeting, Mayor O'Connell issued a proclamation declaring June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth in the City of Taunton.
Juneteenth is recognized as both a federal and state holiday and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas, which occurred more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
April Funches of the Taunton Diversity Network invited the community to attend the organization's 6th Annual Cultural Fair and Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the P.A.C.C. (175 School Street).
In recognition of his outstanding commitment to the community, Mayor O'Connell also presented a citation to Rashaud Garner, owner of Platinum City Gaming and founder of Step Into Your Potential Now. Through youth mentorship, toy drives, back-to-school supply giveaways, youth sports programs, and many other initiatives, Rashaud continues to make a positive impact on the lives of Taunton residents.
We encourage everyone to join in celebrating Juneteenth and honoring the importance of freedom, equality, and community.
