National Geographic Explorer David Stuart and a team of archaeologists have deciphered the name of a Maya astronomer-mathematician for the first time. While other influential figures have long had their names recorded in history, Maya astronomers and mathematicians have lived in obscurity. The discovery of ancient equations attributed to Sak Tahn Waax, or “White-chested Fox,” provides unprecedented insight into the work of Maya scholars.
