Acid rain, acid snow, and acid fog directly effect our health through our water. Acidic waters contain higher then average levels of solid metals and caustic acids that change the pH of our bodies. Drinking waters like this can cause serious health problems. When we burn fossil fuels, sulphur dioxide is made and released into the air. When sulphur dioxide dissolves in rain water it makes sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid is actually a mixture of acids in high concentrations. It is one of the only liquids that will dissolve gold and platinum, Sulphuric acid is much stronger than carbonic acid. It is Extremely Corrosive, it also causes corrossion to rocks and destroys plants and animals on a molecular level. Sulphuric Acid causes severe burns to the body tissues. Nitrous oxides react with water v***r and sunlight to form nitric acid. Nitric acid is highly corrosive and toxic acid that can cause severe burns. Rain is for the most part low in minerals and high in carbonic acid (due to our environment problems it can contain too much carbonic acid and contain sulphuric acid and nitric acid from oil and gas and active volcanoes). Emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from the combustion of fossil fuels, there are also other substances which contribute to acid rain formation. These include hydrochloric acid and organic carboxylic acids. These organic acids include acetic acid and formic acid and are formed when volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are oxidised in the air. Formic acid is metabolized and eliminated by the body. Still some chronic effects have been documented. Some animal experiments have demonstrated it to be a very intrusive on the molecular level changing form of growth mesomorphically, and chronic exposure may cause liver or kidney damage. Another possibility with chronic exposure is development of skin allergies that appear when re-exposed to the chemical. When acid rain falls from the sky, it is taken into plants and trees. Not all of the sulphur dioxide is turned into sulphuric acid, amounts of it can float into the atmosphere, and return to the soil, still as sulphur dioxide. This gas can then block the channels of the leaves of the plants, and stop them from making their own food using sunlight (photosynthesis). Other problems which are caused by acid rain are poisonous (toxic) metals which are dissolved through the rain water can be absorbed by fruit, vegetables and even through the skin of animals. This may not affect the animal very much, but it is a problem for us when we eat the animal. Chemicals such as mercury collect in the organs of animals and can be very toxic if taken into the body, mercury has been linked to brain damage in children, as well as nervous disorders and even death.
