Start of repairs on another early 2000s strawbale house with common plaster failures. Quite a bit of delamination of the finish plaster from the base coat, cracking where lath/mesh didn't overlap properly, and missing kickout flashing where sloped roof conditions terminate at a sidewall - causing water to run right into plaster, forming efflorescence (white powdery deposits that have migrated through the the plaster).

Before and after pics of the Terrebonne plaster repair job. Potassium Silicate paint, Also known as water glass, is a v***r permeable mineral paint that fuses to inorganic substrates (lime, clay or cement plaster) and petrifies. This makes it the perfect final coat for these two strawbale houses as all three plasters are present. And the petrification of the clay plaster means rain pelting the outside of the plaster won't cause it to rehydrate and wear away.

Extensive cracking in one wall of this 18yo strawbale house meant the best move was to tear off the old plaster and start from scratch with all of todays best practices. This includes weep screed, casing bead, 2-ply building paper and lath over all wood framing, and welded wire mesh across the entire wall to provide additional crack resistance and shear strength once embedded in lime plaster.
