Earli, Inc.

Earli, Inc. Earli locates cancer early, when it is much more curable. Earli has an audacious mission: to make cancer a benign experience.

Rather than rely on biomarkers that cancer may - or often may not - naturally provide, Earli's technology *forces* cancer cells to make a precise synthetic, non-human biomarker to localize the cancer in a PET scanner. This is a completely new approach called Synthetic Biopsy. Earli’s $60M financing was led by Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, Perceptive Advisors, Casdin Capital, Sands Capital,

Breyer Capital, Marc Benioff and others. Earli’s Advisory Board includes Jim Allison (Chair of MD Anderson’s Immuno Oncology Group, Nobel Laureate), Bob Langer (MIT Institute Professor, Moderna Co-founder), Phil Greenberg (Co-founder Juno, head of immune oncology Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center), Lee Hartwell (former President of Hutch Cancer Research Center, Nobel Laureate), Judy Garber (leader of cancer prevention and early detection, Dana-Farber), Alan Ashworth (President UCSF Helen Diller Cancer Center).

Earli, Inc. is on NPR Biotech Nation across all U.S. NPR radio stations this week, in the runup to the global J.P. Morgan Health Conference in San Francisco. Earli is running (not marching) towards a cancer therapeutics trial in humans in the next 18 months. How does it work? Earli has developed “genetic switches” that only turn on in cancer cells and reprogram them so they have to make therapies against themselves. These therapies activate the immune system to attack and kill the cancer.

On the intersection where biology meets software and engineering, we will see of the biggest impacts on humanity by AI. As an example, Earli’s early cancer detection and treatment technology wouldn’t exist without AI and machine learning. 20,000 fully DNA-sequenced cancer samples and thousands of images have been running through an AI pipeline we built in the last years. Next, we are building an *AI Flywheel* that is designed to make it ever more accurate to determine what is cancer and what is not. After all, you can only “kill the bad cells and not the good cells” if you know which is which. It’s the Holy Grail in cancer.

Henry Lee, a senior biotechnician, has seen how AI powers Earli’s mission—automating cancer imaging, designing proteins, and driving breakthroughs to transform early cancer detection and treatment.

Imagine a doctor tells you “We have found something in your body that might be cancer. But we don’t know, for sure, so we will just watch it. Come back in twelve months, and we will check if it has grown by then.” You go home that day and then worry for a year whether you have cancer. If you do, you will have lost a precious year of treatment that might have prevented metastases. Sounds crazy? Happens millions of times a year. We don’t just need more early detection - we need more Early Intervention to save thousands of lives every year. Today we published this opinion piece in Newsweek.

We need early cancer detection that leads to early intervention.

As a Holiday gift, Earli's story and technology is featured in WIRED magazine. 🙂
How would a world look like where we could find AND treat cancer at the earliest stages? It may be hard to believe, but it's true: Early detection is the *single biggest* lever to increase survival rates of cancer - more than any medicine or treatment. For lung cancer, the difference between a Stage 1 detection and Stage 4 detection is a 10x (!) higher 5-year survival rate. Liver cancer - 12x. Pancreatic cancer - 14x.
Were going for a moonshot at Earli. Wish us luck. We are getting closer and closer.
