BUILDING TRADES SPOTLIGHT: IRONWORKERS LOCAL 118 Ironworkers Local 118

You have probably seen the work of an ironworker without even realizing it. From the framework inside buildings to the bridges we drive across, ironworkers help build and support the structures our communities rely on every day.

Structural Steel

Structural ironworkers place and connect the steel beams, and columns, that form the framework of buildings and other large structures. They work with crane operators to guide each piece into position before securing it with bolts or welds.

Reinforcing

Reinforcing ironworkers place and secure steel bars, commonly called rebar, and steel mesh inside concrete forms. Once the concrete is poured, the steel helps strengthen foundations, walls, roads, bridges, and other structures.

Bridge Work

Bridge work is a specialized part of structural ironworking. Ironworkers connect the steel framework used in bridges, and they also help maintain and rehabilitate existing structures. The work requires skill, teamwork, careful coordination, and a strong commitment to safety.

Ornamental Ironwork

Ornamental ironworkers install finished metal features such as stairs, railings, gates, fences, and other architectural metalwork. This part of the trade combines function with craftsmanship to create features that are safe, useful, and built to last.

Make sure to stop by the Ironworkers Local 118 booth at Reno LaborFest to meet the people behind the trade and learn more about ironworking and union apprenticeship opportunities.
