The NVMA partnered with the Reno+Sparks Chamber of Commerce last week to give chamber members a firsthand look at one of Nevada’s major mining projects.

The group visited Lithium Americas’ Workforce Hub and toured the Thacker Pass Mine, currently under construction and expected to begin initial production in late 2027.

The tour provided an opportunity for members of Northern Nevada’s business community to learn more about the project, modern mining, and the important role the industry plays in Nevada’s economy.

Representatives from the NVMA, McEwen Inc., and Nevada Gold Mines joined community and business leaders at The Magic of DISCOVERY: The Great Adventure gala on October 10 in Las Vegas. The annual fundraising event supports DISCOVERY Children’s Museum and its work to expand hands-on educational opportunities for children throughout Southern Nevada.

For more than 35 years, the museum has offered interactive exhibits and educational programs that encourage children to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and more through hands-on learning.

First Majestic Silver Corp. reports that progress toward restarting the Jerritt Canyon Mine in Elko County is ahead of schedule in several key areas, with gold production targeted for the second half of 2027.

Recruitment efforts are accelerating, with recent hires including human resources and health and safety managers.

Work at the site is also moving forward. Contractor Cementation has completed 19,570 feet of underground rehabilitation this year, while exploration drilling and infrastructure upgrades continue. The company is also evaluating both underground and open pit mining as part of its restart plans.

The inaugural Battle of the Mines Blood Drive brought together several mining companies in the Winnemucca area for a great cause. The event collected 106 units of blood, exceeding the event’s goal by 44 units and impacting up to 318 lives. Hecla Nevada took first place in the friendly competition, followed by Lithium Americas in second and SSR Mining in third.

Other participating companies included i-80 Gold Corp., SMD Underground Mining Contractors, Florida Canyon, Coeur Rochester, Empire CAT, Orica, and Hycroft.

Nevada mining is a major contributor to state and local tax revenues.

In 2025, the industry paid an estimated $686 million in major taxes, the highest total since 2008.

That included approximately $327 million in Net Proceeds of Minerals Tax and $135 million through the Mining Education Tax, along with sales and use, property and modified business taxes.

A major exploration project near Beatty is moving forward.

The Bureau of Land Management has approved AngloGold Ashanti Nevada Projects’s Arthur Gold Consolidated Exploration Project in Nye County, allowing the company to consolidate four smaller exploration projects into a single project.

The potential scale is significant. AngloGold Ashanti estimates the Arthur project could produce about 500,000 ounces of gold annually and has previously said it could employ 1,000 people.

“We continue to explore in southern Nevada as we advance our Nevada projects with the goal of developing a world-class mining district. BLM’s review and approval of this exploration activity allow us to further explore the area more efficiently in accordance with BLM’s strict regulations,” said Rick Curtsinger, director of corporate affairs and communications for AngloGold Ashanti.

$7,500 for families who need a little extra support during a difficult time.

The NVMA recently presented a $7,500 check to the Ronald McDonald House of Northern Nevada, made possible through the Association’s Suppliers Committee Charity Golf Tournament.

The House provides a home away from home for families with children receiving medical care, helping keep families together and close to the care they need.

Nevada mining’s economic impact extends well beyond the mine site.

The industry supported an estimated $22.5 billion in economic output, $3.2 billion in labor income and 30,600 jobs through direct, indirect and induced activity in 2025.

From suppliers and contractors to household spending, mining activity supports businesses and workers throughout Nevada’s economy.

A career in mining may not be on every student’s radar. Career fairs are an opportunity to change that.

The NVMA recently attended career fairs at the College of Southern Nevada and Nevada State University, connecting with students and discussing the wide range of career paths available in Nevada mining.

From skilled trades and engineering to technology, environmental work, and business, there’s a lot more to a career in mining than many realize.
