Winter battery failures often begin long before temperatures drop. As commercial fleets face increasing electrical demands, understanding how temperature, battery chemistry, and system performance impact reliability is critical to reducing downtime and keeping vehicles on the road.

In a recent Fleet Maintenance Magazine article, Dragonfly Energy Chief Commercial Officer Wade Seaburg shares his expertise on the factors contributing to cold-weather battery failures and the importance of proactive, year-round battery management.

“Cold weather can expose battery problems very quickly, but the conditions that create those problems often developed during warmer months,” Seaburg explained.

The article also explores how different battery chemistries perform in freezing conditions, including insights from testing comparing AGM and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) battery banks.

As fleets continue to adopt more advanced onboard technologies, taking a system-wide approach to battery health, energy management, and preventive maintenance is becoming increasingly important.

Nevada is playing an increasingly important role in building a secure, domestic battery supply chain.

In a recent Washington Examiner op-ed, University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval and Lithium Americas President and CEO Jonathan Evans highlight the work underway across the state to strengthen critical mineral production, develop a skilled workforce, and build what has become known as Nevada’s “Lithium Loop.”

From lithium extraction and processing to battery manufacturing and recycling, Nevada is bringing together industry, education, technology, and workforce development to strengthen the entire battery value chain.
