Costco is testing a new approach to urban housing by combining large-scale retail with residential development. In Los Angeles, the company is partnering with Thrive Living to build apartments directly above a new warehouse location.

The Baldwin Village project will include around 800 housing units, with 184 reserved for low-income residents, helping ease pressure in one of the most expensive housing markets in the U.S. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2027.

A key feature of the model is financing. Revenue generated by the Costco store below is used to help subsidize housing costs, reducing dependence on public funds and government housing programs.

The development also uses modular construction and incorporates modern amenities, showing how mixed-use projects can be both cost-efficient and livable at scale.

Urban planners see this as a potential blueprint for other cities, where underused commercial land could be transformed into housing without expanding urban sprawl.

In Sweden, willow screens are planted around playgrounds to block the wind — their branches naturally root, weave, and thicken each spring, forming living fences that are both more beautiful and more sustainable than plastic barriers.

The city of Warsaw, Poland, employs eight mussels equipped with sensors attached to their shells using hot glue to monitor and automatically shut off the city’s water supply if the mussels detect a problem. When water quality deteriorates, the mussels close their shells, triggering the sensors and alerting the control system. If four out of the eight mussels close their shells, the system automatically cuts off the water supply. These mussels are used for three months before being released back into the wild, and over 50 water treatment plants across Poland utilize the same method.

Adult clams and oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily. However, if the water becomes too toxic, they close their shells and wait until conditions improve.
