How do you know if a 1st year Dental Hygienist student is actually progressing?

Most of the learning in the trades doesn’t happen in a classroom, it happens in the field. But without structure, it's hard to track what’s been taught, practiced, or mastered.

That’s why we’re building competency checklists for every trade and experience level.

These are the foundational skills that matter- and they’re all trackable in OJT Logbook.

For every five Baby Boomers retiring from skilled trades roles, only two younger workers are stepping in to replace them.

It’s one of the clearest signs of the widening talent gap, and it affects every contractor, employer, and training program in the country.

Fewer incoming workers means:
• Longer hiring timelines
• Rising labor costs
• Increased pressure on existing teams
• Lost institutional knowledge as experienced techs leave the field

The solution isn’t just recruiting more people. It’s building structured, transparent, and modern training pathways that help new workers ramp up faster and stay longer.

That’s where digital training tools like OJT Logbook make a difference. They help employers capture skills, track progress, and preserve expertise before it walks out the door.

The workforce is changing. Our training approach has to change with it.

If you’re preparing for 2026 hiring demands, we’re here to help you build a stronger pipeline.

The competition for talent is not slowing down in 2026.

A shrinking pipeline, rising customer expectations, and increasing technical complexity mean employers need stronger strategies to attract, train, and retain skilled workers.

Based on trends we saw across OJT Logbook users this year, here are eight practical steps to help you build a stronger workforce in 2026.

2026 will reward organizations that take training seriously.

A skilled workforce does not happen by accident. It is built through consistent training, strong systems, and clear visibility into real competencies.

If your team is preparing for the year ahead, OJT Logbook is here to help you build a safer, stronger, more capable workforce.

In 2022, there were nearly 11 percent fewer people employed in construction trade occupations compared to 2007. That is 6.2 million workers, and still lower than both pre-pandemic levels and the industry high point almost two decades ago.

What makes this even more significant is that the broader construction industry has already recovered. Overall employment in construction has returned to near 2007 levels. But the number of skilled tradespeople has not followed the same path.

This long-term shrinkage tells a clear story.

The industry is not facing a short-term hiring challenge. It is facing a generational skills gap built over years of declining interest, retiring experts, and fragmented training pipelines.

As we look toward 2026, this is the reality employers must plan for:

• Fewer experienced technicians entering the field
• Higher pressure on training programs to accelerate skill development
• A greater need for structured, documented competency tracking
• Stronger demand for clear career pathways to attract younger talent

At OJT Logbook, we saw this shift reflected across the year. Employers are investing more in skills visibility, safety documentation, and modern training systems because the old way of training cannot keep up with the workforce we have today.

The good news is that progress is happening. Companies that build clear learning pathways and measure real competencies are closing skill gaps faster and creating better environments for the next generation of technicians.

As 2025 ends, one thing is certain.
The future of the trades will belong to employers who prepare for it.

Here is to building stronger workforces, smarter training, and a safer industry in 2026.

Over 1 billion dollars per week.

That is what U.S. businesses paid in workplace injury costs in 2024.

But the real cost was carried by the people who were hurt.

Behind every incident is a technician who lost time, confidence, or mobility. A family that worried. A team that had to adjust.

These moments stay with people long after the paperwork is filed.

Most of these injuries were preventable.

Many happened because training was inconsistent or skills were not reinforced.

When workers do not get clear guidance or proper support, risk grows.

And that risk affects real lives.

Better training is not just a business strategy. It is a responsibility. It keeps people safe. It gives technicians the confidence to do their jobs well. It shows that employers value their teams as human beings, not just line items.

Digital tracking helps make this possible. It creates structure. It reduces gaps. It gives every worker a fair chance to learn, grow, and stay safe on the job.

If you are planning your 2026 goals, start with your people.

Invest in training that protects them.

Because every injury prevented is a life protected.
