At Skiles Group, safety is a shared responsibility—something we all take seriously to protect each other and the people around us. Each year, we recognize someone who makes an exceptional contribution to our safety program through leadership, innovation, and initiative. This individual plays a meaningful role in strengthening our safety culture and significantly improving project safety performance.

Our Safety Star Award honors a team member who goes above and beyond to improve our safety program and protect those around them. For 2026, we’re proud to recognize Superintendent Russell Jones for this well-earned distinction. Russell leads by example, brings smart, practical ideas to the table, and shows true commitment to keeping our people safe.

Please join us in congratulating Russell—and thanking him for the difference he makes on every project.

Each year, Skiles Group recognizes one team member who exemplifies our Core Values and helps carry our legacy forward.

This honor is known as the Buddy Brumley Legacy Award, named in memory of our first award recipient: a much-loved and deeply respected teammate whose impact continues to be felt. Buddy’s legacy was built on character, commitment, relationships, and the way he showed up for the people around him.

The Legacy Award reflects both where we come from and where we are going. It honors the firm we know today, shaped by those who have invested their talent, care, and dedication into Skiles Group. It also looks ahead to the people who will continue strengthening our culture, raising the standard, and leading us into the future while staying rooted in the values established by our founders.

Chosen by their peers, the Legacy Award recipient is someone who both respects and adds to the Skiles Group legacy. Through their actions, attitude, and leadership, they demonstrate excellence in our Core Values:
▪️ Do the right thing.
▪️ Serve with passion.
▪️ Work together.
▪️ Be curious.

For 2026, the Buddy Brumley Legacy Award goes to Superintendent Jeff Witte, a teammate who reflects the best of who and what we are: past, present, and future.

Please join us in congratulating Jeff on this deeply meaningful recognition.

The biggest problems on construction projects usually don’t start in the field. They start much earlier, with disconnected teams, delayed collaboration, and processes that create misalignment from day one.

In his latest article for Associated General Contractors of America’s Constructor Magazine, “Breaking the Cycle,” Keyan Zandy shares why many project frustrations are predictable and how owners can change the outcome through earlier collaboration, stronger alignment, and smarter delivery strategies. From Core Teams to Target Value Delivery, it’s a practical look at building projects with fewer surprises and better results.

At Skiles Group, our people are the foundation of everything we do. Through our Meet the Team series, we’re highlighting the individuals behind the work — sharing a little about their backgrounds, interests, and personalities beyond the jobsite and office. Next up is Jonathan Collins, Vice President, Preconstruction.

▪️ What do you like most about working at Skiles Group?
The People. The Talent Level is off the charts, and it runs from our CEO to new hires. You feel their passion for their projects and their clients when you talk to them. It challenges me to match their passion do right for them and our clients.

▪️ What did you want to be when you grew up?
A fighter pilot. I was obsessed with aircraft growing up — and honestly still am. I used to research and build models of military aircraft, go to air shows, and spend a lot of time learning about World War II planes. That was the peak of coolness in my mind. I didn’t end up following that path professionally, but I still think about taking flying lessons.

▪️ If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?
Buy land. First, I’d buy a ranch — probably 1,000 acres or more — and build a large house for my parents where my girls and future grandkids could all visit. Fishing ponds and plenty of space outdoors. After that, I’d want a beach house and the ability to travel the world to see old architecture and real wildlife.

▪️ Any hobbies or bucket list goals?
My wife would probably tell you I have too many hobbies. Hunting, fishing, bicycling, and reloading and tinkering with fi****ms are probably the big ones. As for the bucket list, that list keeps growing daily, but some big ones are flying in a P-51 Mustang, elk hunting, hunting in Africa, marlin fishing, helicopter hog hunting, and scuba diving.

▪️ What’s on your playlist right now?
My music choices are pretty eclectic and depend on my mood or what I’m doing. For running: TOOL, The Cult, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, The Rolling Stones, and Rage Against the Machine. For workouts: Metallica, Iron Maiden, Danzig, TOOL, Rage, and Eazy-E. Long drives usually mean ‘70s rock — Eagles, Pink Floyd, Steve Miller, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. On the boat or outdoors, it’s more yacht rock, country, Tejano, and classic rock.

▪️ What was the last thing you read or binge-watched?
The last physical book I read was Empire of the Summer Moon — the story of Quanah Parker. As for TV, I’m a huge Game of Thrones nerd. I’ve read and reread all the books and watched the series multiple times. Right now, I’m rewatching House of the Dragon ahead of the new season this summer.

And my favorite quote is by Winston Churchill: “Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they actually look forward to the trip.”

TEXO, The Construction Association recently held its 2025 Distinguished Building Awards Gala at Stature Aviation, where two of our local projects— Methodist Health System’s Methodist Celina Medical Center Hospital & Professional Office Building and Baylor Scott & White’s Roberts Tower Revitalization at Baylor University Medical Center, Phase One—were honored with Merit Awards. The Distinguished Building Awards are judged on difficulty in construction, unusual construction techniques, final appearance and quality, timeliness of completion, and safety.

Pictured here with TEXO President/CEO Meloni Raney are some of our Skiles Group team members who attended the event to accept the awards on behalf of our clients and project teams. Thanks to Miles Robinson, Michelle Davis, Jonathan Collins, Michael Blakemore, Jake Pechauer, Sean Hughes, Justin Davis, Katayoun (Kattie) Mokhtarzadeh, Ryan Pence, Erick Rios, Thomas Hardy, Dara Davulcu, Michael Knapp, Alex Chow, and Jeanne Robinson for joining us.

We got a head start on Mental Health Awareness Month at our kickoff event, where we made time for something simple yet meaningful: resting, moving, connecting, and focusing on well-being.

Our Richardson team came together for a healthy lunch, locally made ice cream from the “Tongue in Cheek” treat truck, trainer-led stretch & flex sessions designed for the physical demands of field work, a little bit of art therapy, and chair massages.

The pressures of our industry are real. Mental health and wellness deserve ongoing attention, practical support, resources, ideas, and a workplace that encourages people to take care of themselves and one another.
