If you are currently suffering a water shortage,
It is recommended to shut off the gas valve or electrical breaker to your tank water heater to prevent kettling. This could cause irreparable damage to the appliance if air gets into a hot tank.
If you have a hot water boiler, it should be already on a "closed" loop with a low water cutoff safety and should be set at 12-15psig.
(12psi = 28' lift ; 15psi = 34' lift)
The radiant loops should continue to heat if working correctly.
However, the domestic water side of combination boilers will be dry and steam boilers will not function without continuous water supply due to low water safeties. Some aquatherm systems may not operate correctly either depending on how it was originally installed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our Richmond city workers, community, and all those affected by the current water crisis during this freezing weather.
It is also recommended that you or your contractor flush your water heater and hydronic system after this crisis to remove sediment.
