Rusty and decrepit may be perfect for Halloween decorations. But on the inside of your water tank? Not so much.

Have you ever wondered why the anode rod in a tank storage water heater is so important? This protective component is typically made from magnesium, aluminum, or a zinc-aluminum alloy. These metals corrode more readily than the steel tank itself, taking the brunt of corrosion first.

However, over time, the rod gradually deteriorates, and once depleted, the corrosion could start attacking the tank. This could lead to an irreversible, irreparable leak. How quickly an anode rod wears out depends on factors such as water chemistry and quality, hot water use, whether the home has a water softener installed, and the anode rod material.

The good news is that during tank water heater maintenance, Bradley Mechanical’s certified plumbers inspect the rod and recommend a replacement when needed.

Closing your air vents isn’t the same as turning off light switches.

While closing off air vents in unused rooms may seem like an easy way to lower your energy bill, your HVAC system doesn’t automatically produce less heated or cooled air.

Your HVAC system is designed to push a fixed volume of air throughout your home. Closing or blocking supply vents can restrict airflow and increase pressure inside the ductwork. This added pressure may cause the blower motor in your system to work harder as it detects a blockage. As a result, your system pushes more conditioned air through existing duct leaks, placing an unnecessary strain on HVAC components.

For better airflow:

✅Keep supply and return vents open

✅Move furniture, rugs, and curtains away from registers

✅Replace dirty air filters regularly as recommended
