🌵 How Drought Impacts Your Home (and What You Can Do About It) 🌵
Drought isn’t just about dry weather—it can seriously affect your home and your wallet. Here are a few key things every homeowner should know:
💧 Water Restrictions & Costs
During drought conditions, water bills often increase and strict usage limits are put in place. You may face restrictions on watering your lawn, washing your car, or filling pools—and fines if you don’t comply.
🏡 Foundation & Structural Issues
Dry soil shrinks, especially around your home’s foundation. This can lead to:
Cracks in walls and floors
Uneven settling
Doors and windows sticking
These repairs can get expensive fast if not addressed early.
🐜 Pests Move In
When water is scarce, pests like termites, ants, and rodents start looking for moisture—often inside your home. Dead landscaping can also remove natural barriers that normally keep them away.
🌿 Drought-Tolerant Plant Tips
Want a yard that survives the heat? Try these low-water options:
Native plants (like coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and switchgrass) thrive with minimal watering
Succulents (sedum, hens & chicks) store water and require little maintenance
Deep-rooted perennials (lavender, Russian sage) handle dry conditions well
Mulch your beds to retain moisture and protect roots
Group plants with similar watering needs to avoid waste
✅ What You Can Do
Protect your home with a few simple steps:
Keep soil around your foundation evenly moist
Switch to drought-tolerant landscaping 🌿
Install efficient irrigation systems
Watch for early signs of cracks or shifting
Stay on top of pest prevention
💡 A little prevention now can save you thousands later!

Thinking about Springtime DIY?
Rule of Thumb:
If it involves gas, electricity, structure, hazardous materials, or permits, it’s usually best to hire a pro:
🚫 Electrical Work (Beyond Basics)
• Rewiring circuits, installing new breaker panels, or adding outlets
• Mistakes can cause fires, electrocution, or code violations ✅ DIY is usually fine for: replacing light fixtures, switches, or outlets if you know how and turn off power
🔥 Gas Line Work
• Installing or modifying gas lines for stoves, dryers, or fireplaces
• Even small errors can lead to gas leaks or explosions 👉 Always use a licensed professional
🌳 Tree Removal (Large Trees)
• Large or leaning trees near the house
• High risk of injury and property damage ✅ Small pruning is fine; big jobs should go to arborists
⚖️ Work That Requires Permits
• Anything requiring inspection (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, structural)
• DIY without permits can void insurance or reduce home value

Do you live in a flood zone? You can check here: FEMA Flood Map Service Center | https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search
Enter your address and make sure you are prepared for potential Spring shower flooding.

Are you covered?
Get the Right Flood Insurance: Purchase flood insurance to cover losses directly caused by flooding, as standard homeowners' insurance typically does not cover flood damage.

If you are unsure of where to purchase flood insurance contact the NFIP Referral Call Center at 1-800-427-466. They can put you in touch with qualified agents in your area.

Don't get caught off guard! You'll likely need to have this type of policy in place for at least 30 days before any event occurs.

Did you know that a typical bathroom remodel can cost between $7500 - $12,000 with an average timeline being 6-8 weeks! Seriously, HGTV should have a disclaimer for realistic construction expectations. The pandemic has caused a lot of delays in our industry so adding another week or more could be more accurate depending on what type of remodel you are doing.
Below are some ways to revamp your bathroom on a budget and DIY!!

1. Fresh Paint on the walls can transform any room! Sherwin Williams is our go-to brand of paint. Agreeable Gray was the top color choice in 2020 and a perfect neutral for any room. Alabaster is white that has lots of warmth undertones. This year we are loving Retreat, a sophisticated organic green.
2. Update your Vanity with a coat of Paint! Make sure you clean the vanity and let it dry completely before taking on this venture. We suggest using a mixture of white distilled vinegar and a little warm water, although heavier products may be needed. Depending on your budget and the paint you choose – this can a simple task or take a few coats. Our production manager Paige loves to use mineral paint for her makeovers but any interior paints should work just fine. Average cost is $10-30!
3. Upgrade your Hardware. While you can find new hardware at Lowes, Home Depot or even Amazon, if you are on a budget, try Hobby Lobby. They have some unique finds that are 50% off every couple of weeks.
4. Don’t want to splurge on a new counter top? Paint that too!! Counter top paint can run anywhere from $89-$150.
5. Upgrade Lights and Mirrors - You would be surprised at all the deals you can find on Facebook market place or clearance sections of stores. Don’t have the funds for anything new? You can always spray-paint fixtures and add new bulbs or sconces to give an updated appearance! Have a standard sheet mirror – google ways to add a frame for less than $20
