As we continued to celebrate 50 years of Whisenhunt Construction, Inc. Our next 'From the Past' article feature takes us back to 2007, when the Palladium-Item featured both Whisenhunt Construction and Whisenhunt Cabinetry:
Whisenhunt Believes in High Quality
BY STACEY SHANNON
In January 2007, a fire devastated Whisenhunt Construction. Now owners Keith and Beth Whisenhunt can look back and see the good that came from it. Before the fire, the Whisenhunts’ two companies — Whisenhunt Construction and Whisenhunt Cabinetry — were in separate locations. After the fire, they were able to combine both businesses into one building located at 645 Indiana Avenue.
Whisenhunt Construction began in 1976. Initially, the company worked as a subcontractor and then transitioned to general contracting in the early 1990s. As a third-generation building contractor, Keith was prepared to grow his business based on considerable experience. Today, the company works on all types of projects, from commercial to light commercial to residential.
“I think the reason we have sustained over 33 years is because we really are a very flexible company,” Beth said. “We can shift from large projects to much smaller projects with ease.”
Whisenhunt Construction offers a variety of services including general contracting, design/build services, construction management and more. Although the company has completed construction projects for hospitals and banks, it also builds custom homes and room additions for residential customers.
Working with cabinets and tops on construction projects led to a second business for the couple, who opened Whisenhunt Cabinetry in 2003. Their cabinet company offers a variety of “green” cabinets including full custom, semi-custom and standard stock cabinets. A wide selection of countertops is also offered. The showroom is filled with several kitchen displays featuring many of the finishes, styles and options available.
Beth said the cabinetry sales staff, Kim Schmidt and John Davidson, works closely with customers during the design phase to make sure their expectations are met. They understand that kitchen remodels tend to be more personal than any other home project.
“The kitchen is the heart of the home,” Beth said. “That’s where everybody gathers. We have completed some beautiful, ‘showcase’ kitchen installations that many people might think you’d have to go to a bigger city to find. At the onset of each project, our designers take ample time to talk with customers to understand their needs, time requirements and budget preferences.”
Whisenhunt Cabinetry doesn’t design and install kitchens exclusively. Residentially, the company often works with bathrooms, entertainment areas, walk-in closets, pantries, garages and home offices. Commercially, the company has provided and installed cabinets and tops for offices, libraries, medical facilities, restaurants and more. Although Whisenhunt Cabinetry offers installation, they also sell cabinets outright.
No matter which business they are working in, the employees of Whisenhunt Construction and Whisenhunt Cabinetry take customer service, quality and loyalty very seriously. Many of the construction employees have been with the Whisenhunts for 15 to 30 years.
“All our employees believe in high quality and go the extra mile to take care of important details for our customers,” said Keith.
Whisenhunt Construction and Whisenhunt Cabinetry work throughout the region, not just in Richmond, which is home to the Whisenhunts. The family business includes Jeff Geres, Beth’s brother, who has been with the construction company from the beginning.
“We definitely consider Jeff to be our most valued asset,” Beth said.
