Logs on Spring Creek in Elk County in 1896. The lumbering industry was the major industry that built the wealth of Ridgway and most of Elk County. The Allegheny Plateau was blessed with a tremendous resource of tree species mostly conifers that were prized by the early settlers and people back on the East Coast for ship building, and various forms of construction, especially homes. In the early years of the industry our ancestors had to utilize the watersheds that crisscrossed the hills and valleys as the way of moving timber.

The Highland Hotel located in Highland Township, Elk County in 1938. The Highland was a historical landmark that was originally a stagecoach stop in the 1800's. Back in the days when there weren't vehicles, they built the hotel here for all the people that worked down in the woods - the oil fields and the loggers. This was where they came to catch the stagecoach and to wind down after a week of work. The historic hotel was destroyed in a fire on January 3, 2017.

The Titanic’s Anchor Chain: A Triumph of Engineering

In 1909, the Titanic’s anchor chain stood as a remarkable example of the engineering prowess of its time. Stretching over 300 meters and weighing nearly 100 tons, this colossal chain was meticulously designed to complement the unprecedented scale of the ship it was meant to secure.

Each link, precisely forged, weighed about 225 kilograms and required extensive manpower and specialized equipment to manufacture. Its immense size and strength were crucial for the ship’s safe mooring, showcasing the industrial advancements of the early 20th century.

Although the Titanic’s voyage ended in tragedy, its anchor chain remains a testament to the ambition and ingenuity of its builders, reflecting the extraordinary engineering achievements that defined the golden age of ocean liners.
