PSA with these extreme cold temperatures a few key things to look out for if you have a heat pump. You may experience a few operations you aren’t used to seeing. Your system may make noises you’ve never heard before the outdoor fan may stop briefly and you could see steam coming out of the system. This is normal defrost cycle. You may also see your outdoor stop, running totally and your thermostat revert to auxiliary heat strips. This is also normal depending on the temperature lockout your thermostat is set for if you experience a loss of heat or have any concerns with the operation of your system, give us a call at 912-712-8991. With the extreme temperatures we are having lots of questions about your HVAC system. So we wanted to give everyone a few pointers. If you have

NATURAL GAS

your primary source of heat is the indoor unit. Your outdoor will not run, that is normal. You may have

ELECTRIC HEAT

only if your in a mobile home or some condos. In this case your outdoor unit will not run in heating as well. If your outdoor is running in heat you have a

HEAT PUMP.

In that case you may see a layer of ice form on your outdoor unit it could grow up to a few inches before going into defrost. In defrost you will hear a big whooshing sound your outdoor fan will turn off and you may see some steam. That is all normal during that defrost cycle. Your unit actually switches to cool to shed the outdoor ice and your emergency electric heat strips should kick in you may smell a slight burning smell if they have not been used much, that is also normal. Depending on how your system is set up, it will go into that defrost every 30,60,90, or 120 minutes. If you feel cold air during that defrost cycle, you may not have heat strips or have an issue with them. Also keep in mind with newer smart thermostats you may have a outdoor compressor temperature protection to where your outdoor unit will not run at all below a certain set-point, typically they all come set at 35°F. If you normally see your outdoor run during heat and it is not running below 35°F and you have a smart thermostat that may be the issue. If you have an emergency with no heat call us at 912-712-8991 we will be running all the calls we can first come first serve for non vip customer. Stay warm and stay safe.
