Hi Terra Lovers — putting together some Facebook ads for Terra and I'd love to feature real owners, not actors. If you'd be up for filming a quick 30–60 sec phone video in your yard with your Terra — what's surprised you, a bird you've ID'd, why you got one , what you like most — drop a comment or DM me and I'll send a free Terra T-shirt and baseball cap for anything we use. Total time: maybe 5 min. 🙏

Scott here - Besides being a cofounder of Terra, I've been a professional photographer since my early 20s. I have about half a million nature photos and videos in my archive, and I collect more every day. In the past I've kept these to myself and used them on projects like the Warbler Guide, but I want to make a change and give people the chance to see more of my work. I'm going to be posting a lot more on Instagram. I'm just starting, so please come check it out, and let me know what you think. Follows and likes always appreciated!

It's here! We've got a NEW BETA FOR THE ANDROID VERSION of the app for you to try. We've done all the same improvements and fixes that are on the iOS app. Note that this is a beta, and there are a few known bugs...we expect these to get squashed in the next week or so.
- Bluetooth setup is disabled until testing complete
- Play may stop after 5-10 minutes of playing
- Android back button not supported at the moment
- Migration watch is not selecting the proper bird
- ID History requires selection of all three buttons, otherwise history not shown
Try it out and let us know what you think! If you find a bug or just something you think should change, please let us know at [email protected] and use the subject "Android Beta".
You'll find the beta in the Google Play store...search "Terra Listens", scroll down to the "App Support" area on that page and click to Join the Beta, then scroll back up and click "Update". If you decide you want to remove it, you can just go to the same place and click "Leave the Beta".

Just this week I had an article published in the local paper about the American woodcock dieout that happened during the extended freeze from late January into February. The article is about Cape May, but it's likely that we had a major population drop in the northern end of the woodcock range - they can make it about a week without food, but when the ground freezes for an extended period they starve. It was heartbreaking to see, and it gives me a renewed appreciation of birds like Carolina chickadee and Canada goose that can survive for weeks in conditions that would kill a person in just a few hours. I'm hoping Terra units will help monitor woodcock in the spring when they are doing their courtship behavior (really the only time they make sounds) - that's the kind of monitoring that would really help us understand what's happening out there and possibly guide conservation with things like reducing hunting limits when populations are stressed.

Weather conditions conspired to prevent them from being able to feed.

2025 has been an incredible year for the Terra community! We wanted to share a few things we accomplished this year...

1. We launched the Terra Network! There are more than 2,000 Terra Stations around the country (and the world) now, taking in massive amounts of data and connecting people to the nature all around them. A few stats: Terra identified over 103 million birds and had almost 1 million hits on 142 unique radio tags. Our participation in the Monarch Project, which tracked Monarch butterflies to their roosts in Mexico, is just one example of the collective power of community science!

2. We launched the new app....twice! V1 of the app helped get a lot of people going with Terra, but it turned out to have a lot of issues that we didn't like. We moved development in-house, and we've completely re-written the app for iOS and expect to have the Android version out in January. Some of the features in the new app (including a few that will be here very soon) include - streamlined and improved setup for Terra Stations, a cleaner interface, improved stats, yard list and species review features, new filters for history, international language support, autonomous recording mode, more bird images, and much more!

3. We improved the website - we've now aligned the user area of the website with the app, so all the features in the app are on the web and visa versa.

4. We added TV support - we now have apps for Fire TV, Samsung, LG and Apple TV, so you can listen to Terra directly through your entertainment system.

5. We developed sound filtering - including human voice removal! this is ongoing, but soon we'll have significant improvements for sound filtering that will make listening to your Terra better and more relaxing - no more road noise, airplane noise, and other human-made sounds.

6. We added BirdGenie - as part of standardizing and improving ID, we licensed BirdGenie, the current standard for Bird ID software. It's a big improvement, but we are actually working on adding other ID engines of our own (and others') design, so you can choose what works best for you.

7. We shipped antennas - we were able to get out antennas to help users increase their detection and wifi ranges and pick up more radio tags in their area.

8. We made lots of firmware updates - the physical Terra Stations have been holding up in all kinds of conditions out there, from hurricanes to blizzards to blazing heat. Meanwhile, we've been souping up the internal software, and making them more stable, more capable, and just generally better - something we intend to continue into the future.

9. We built a customer service portal - we answered over 2500 tickets in 2025, and are about to release a self-diagnostic tool for users that will solve many issues with just a few clicks.

That's a quick summary - I'm sure we've left a lot out. We'll have a future post on what's coming in the New Year, but for now we just want to say thanks to our Terra community for making this dream come true. There's so much more to come, and we're so happy that we get to go there with you!

Maybe you've seen the article published in the NYT this week on tracking Monarch butterfly migration...our parent company CTT creates the tags that go on those butterflies, and we're so excited to see all the amazing new data we're getting - in no small part due to Terra! Terra Stations have been picking up signals from these tags, and relaying the data to Project Monarch. They are part of the overall network that tracks the Monarchs in such incredible detail. Every new Terra installed is expanding our network, and we're going to see a lot more actionable data as we grow. Thanks to all our users for making the Terra Network a reality!

Scientists used tiny new sensors to follow the insects on journeys that take thousands of miles to their winter colonies in Mexico.
