Cellular Tracking Technologies

Cellular Tracking Technologies We are a team of biologists, engineers and conservationists making tools for wildlife telemetry.

CTT brings the “Internet of Things” revolution to wildlife telemetry. Our careers in wildlife biology translate to the most integrated ergonomic designs, housing the most reliable and highest-performing GPS telemetry devices. Lightweight, solar-powered, energy-thrifty, and rugged, these devices deliver critical high resolution data at low cost via global cellular networks.

Future marine scientist? Perhaps! Mr. Burcher here seen staffing the CTT booth at the annual Marine Science Symposium at the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center coordinated by Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center. Who wouldn’t want to learn about transmitters from such a cute kid! Come visit the booth and get one of our sweet stickers too!! https://celltracktech.slack.com/files/UJQTASY0P/F0B767J0K26/img_8540.jpg

This is SO COOL!
Blū+ data on Tr-colored Blackbirds in California. The Southern Sierra Research Station has been working with our tech since 2019 and it's great to see how much information they're able to gather on small - previously untrackable - species. Check out their webpage that gives you an interactive glimpse into the life of this very cool species. https://southernsierraresearch.org/testing-new-blu-tags-results/

Back on August 4, 2025 we posted about purchasing a new type of wildlife tag that can be detected by cell phones and other IoT devices (think AirTags) as they travel. In addition, they are detectable by both the increasing numbers of Motus stations equipped to detect relatively new 2.4 GHz tags as w...

At Cellular Tracking Technologies, we’ve always believed that better data leads to better conservation.
Our SensorStation receivers are now operating on NexSens buoys offshore New Jersey as part of the NJDEP Research and Monitoring Initiative. Equipped for dual-frequency detection, they’re logging movements of tagged birds and bats in an environment that’s been a black box for far too long.
This work helps connect offshore detections to the broader Motus network, giving researchers and resource managers the context they need—whether it’s a quick fly-through or active foraging.
We build telemetry that works where it counts. Proud to contribute to science that supports both wildlife and responsible offshore energy development.

We can’t protect what we don’t understand.

This excellent article highlights the work of Michael Lanzone, Trish Miller, and collaborators studying eastern golden eagles through tracking and field research. Following birds like Athena and Gwaihir is helping researchers better understand migration, nesting, winter ecology, and the challenges these birds face across a human-dominated landscape.

It’s a powerful example of how field science and tracking technology can work together to support conservation.

There's a special story unfolding at Bernheim Forest and Arboretum in Kentucky, where eastern golden eagles have made their winter home. Scientists have been tracking golden eagles since the 1970s, but the first known pair to be tracked simultaneously in eastern North America was at Bernheim.

Great to be at the Eastern Bird Banding Association meeting this weekend and especially excited to see several presentations featuring work connected to Cellular Tracking Technologies.

Looking forward to hearing all the great talks tomorrow- but especially Emma Rhodes on “Ultralight solar transmitter enables fine-scale movement ecology in North American hummingbird migration,” Grace Muench on “Tracking Passerines and translocated Northern Bobwhite at Letterkenny Army Depot,” and Aaron Coolman on “Studying the movement ecology of Northern Saw-whet Owls using Motus and GPS telemetry.”

It’s really fun to see our technology being used across such a wide range of systems — from hummingbirds to passerines, bobwhite, and owls — and helping answer some very cool questions about movement, migration, and avian ecology.

If you’re at EBBA, check out their talks!!

🦋 Historic monarch migration update

We’re now detecting tagged monarchs moving north into the U.S. in real time.

• 9 tagged monarchs have reached the U.S. border region or beyond
• 5 are already deep into the U.S. (including Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas)
• For the first time, fall-tagged monarchs tracked to Mexico are now being detected on the return leg north

This is a major milestone in migration science and conservation.

Teamwork makes the Dream Work!
Monarch migration is accelerating — and we’re watching it unfold in real time.

New Project Monarch Collaboration data now show:

• 9 tagged monarchs have reached the U.S. border region or beyond
• 5 individuals are already deep into the U.S. (including Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas)
• For the first time ever, fall-tagged monarchs tracked south to Mexico are now being detected on the northbound return leg of a complete migration cycle

This is one of the clearest real-time views yet of how monarchs move across North America — individual by individual.

Our hearts are full, and we can’t wait to see what these amazing butterflies continue to tell us. These discoveries are only possible because of collaboration across borders, across countries, across a continent. we are grateful to all of the partners in the Project Monarch collaboration, and so excited that one of the butterflies tagged by our partners in Mexico is the first to make it into Texas!! Read on to learn more!

Big shout out to WWF México and Reserva de la Biosfera Mariposa Monarca-CONANP for their dedication to protecting the monarchs and the habitat they depend on each winter throughout the highlands of Mexico. Our collaborative conservation research was a highlight of 2026 that will be tough to top- but we're excited to watch and see which of the monarchs tagged make it to the US border first, and especially to see for the first time how far this migratory generation flies before starting the next generation in the amazing multi-generational lifecycle of this magnificent species! Follow along with us in the Project Monarch app - free, wherever you get your apps. Thanks to all the Project Monarch Collaborators for their dedication and hard work!
