Real State Tax Rate Roanoke County:
Did you know?
The last three years, 2023, 2024, 2025, Roanoke County Board of Supervisors reduced real estate tax rate by 3 cents, 2 cents, and 1 cent for 6 cents total! Not since 2009 have rates gone down.
What does that mean by your tax bill?
For example: A home assessed today at $457,300 reduced its cost by $274.38; so, while your assessment went up 8% or $350, it could have been $624.38 or $274.38 more had the rate remained at $1.09 or 6 cents higher. Many citizens are not aware or do not remember that we cut tax rates. They told me so recently.
Real Estate assessments are mandated by state law to measure fair market values all across the state. When homes sell in your neighborhood for higher prices, that impacts your next year’s assessment. And the sale prices exceed inflation and the assessed values many times.
Our board always considers tax reduction, when possible, like the last three years. In fact, cities around our county still have the same tax rates that have not been reduced like the county.
Roanoke County board members have led with real estate tax reductions!
So, our board will always be mindful of county schools’ education support, public safety, Police and Fire-Ems, trash and general services, parks and recreation, and employees, in budget items with an eye on tax rate reductions without adversely impacting delivery of citizen services. We are now just starting our annual budget process.
