In a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts face increasing challenges, supporting local Black and minority-owned businesses has never been more critical. These businesses play a vital role in fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and strengthening our community. By attending the Black Excellence Expo, community members can take direct action to help close local racial wealth gaps, build a more inclusive economy, and celebrate Black entrepreneurship.
The economic case for supporting Black businesses is compelling. According to Citibankโs Global Perspectives and Solutions (GPS) report, the ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต ๐ด๐ฎ๐ฝ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐จ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ผ๐บ๐ ๐ฎ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด $๐ฎ.๐ต ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป between 2020 and 2024. While some progress has been made, with the number of Black-owned businesses growing by 14.3% in 2021โpartly due to the social movement for racial justice and initiatives like Buy Blackโit remains evident that systemic barriers persist. At the current pace, the report noted that ๐ถ๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ด๐ฌ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ผ ๐ผ๐๐ป ๐ฏ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น to their share of the U.S. population. If the number of Black-owned businesses mirrored that of the white population, we could see an additional 600,000 firms and over 5 million new jobs, generating up to $2.9 trillion in revenue and $840 billion in annual payrolls.
Black entrepreneurs face significant barriers, including limited access to capital, unfair lending practices, and fewer networking opportunities. By supporting Black-owned businesses, we contribute to a more equitable economic landscape while driving innovation and community growth.
Now in its third year, the Black Excellence Expo continues to expand, and we need the publicโs support to ensure its success. Join us and learn about these amazing businesses. You can make a differenceโone business, one purchase, and one opportunity at a time.
