This video shows you how the famous LEGO is made. Note the molds that form the pieces; these are called plastic injection molds.
Plastic injection molds form and eject molten plastics to produce parts like LEGOs, pens, and tool handles. They reduce waste because they form plastic parts instead of cutting parts out of plastic. However, once they’ve worn, manufacturers usually have to rework and re-polish the mold's surface so that it performs like a new mold.
Instead of spending capital on new molds or time on reworking old molds, many manufacturers are looking for ways to extend the life and performance of their current molds. PVD coatings, one of our specialties, can extend the life of these molds and reduce friction/increase lubricity so the pieces pop out easily just like you see in this video.
