Grassroots Radio Conference

Grassroots Radio Conference The event is hosted by a different station each year.

Founded 1996, the Grassroots Radio Conference is an annual gathering of college and community radio stations for the sharing of ideas, technology, and camaraderie. The Grassroots Radio Conference (GRC) celebrates the vibrant and democratic medium of local, community-driven radio. We bring together media artists, community organizers, radio operators and engineers, and ordinary people from across the country to learn, discuss, brainstorm and build.

The Grassroots Radio Conference salutes the Prometheus Radio Project, without who many of us would not be here. Prometheus is a non-profit organization founded by a small group of radio activists in 1998, who build, support, and advocate for community radio stations that bring together and empower local, participatory voices and movements for social change. To that end, the Prometheus Radio Project works to demystify technology, the political processes that govern access to our media system, and the impact media has on our lives and communities.

Their primary focus is on building a large community of LPFM stations and listeners, believing this community can grow into a powerful force working toward the democratic media future they envision. The Prometheus Radio Project supports community groups at every stage of building their stations, facilitating public participation in the FCC regulatory process, and sponsoring events that promote awareness and support for media democracy and LPFM radio.

A tip of the Grassroots Radio Conference tower to Wheat Paste Radio, who are about to become one of the newest LP-FMs on the radio dial at 100.5 FM in Keeseville, New York.

“We’re building a community-run and -supported hyper-local radio station. We secured a frequency via the FCC and have 3 years to start broadcasting. 100.5 FM is ours to create a whole world onto. This can be a community resource, a creative endeavor, an archive of everything that makes this area special. Our frequency only reaches from Keeseville to Peru. But, the stream will be available wherever you have internet access. Donate to help buy broadcasting equipment and tell your friends what we’re doing here. If you’ve got a show idea or want to get involved in some other way….”
