Every year the back-to-school season poses a number of challenges; traffic increases, buses are back on the road, students are walking or biking, and new drivers are on their way to school. According to safekids.org, 40 kids are hit by moving vehicles every day in the U.S., which is about 15,000 injured children each year. It is important to be on the lookout and extra cautious when students are going to and from school in order to keep everyone safe.

Below are some back-to-school driving tips:
• Always stop when a school bus has an extended stop sign, it is illegal to pass when students are entering / exiting
• Never pass a school bus on the right
• Stop your vehicle far enough from a bus to allow extra space for children to enter / exit safely
• Do not block crosswalks & stop for pedestrians waiting to cross
• Pay extra attention in school zones, residential areas, playgrounds & parks
• Always stop when directed to do so by signs, patrol officers, & crossing guards
• Stay alert; children are the least predictable pedestrians & the most difficult to see

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, pedestrian and bicycle fatalities make up 20% of all traffic fatalities every year. With another 60,000 pedestrians and 42,000 bicyclists injured in roadway crashes annually. Pedestrians and bicyclists have less protection in a crash, travel slower than vehicles and can be difficult to spot by drivers. Below are some tips to keep yourself and those around you safe whenever you’re on the road.

• Avoid lingering in blind spots
• Prepare for wide turns
• Make yourself visible
• Obey traffic laws, signals, & signs
• Stay alert & undistracted

Operation Safe Driver Week is July 13-19, which is an initiative aimed at improving driving behavior. This year the focus is on reckless, careless or dangerous driving. According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), driving a vehicle in willful disregard for the safety of people and property is driving recklessly. Careless/dangerous driving is operating a vehicle without care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road. During this week law enforcement will be on the lookout for drivers engaging in unsafe behaviors, such as speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, drunk or drugged driving, etc.

Safe Driving Habits:
• Buckle Up
• Drive Sober
• Pay Attention to the Road
• Never Drive Drowsy
• Obey Speed Limits
• Share the Road Responsibly
• Pay Attention to Flashing Lights

During the summer months it is not uncommon to experience high temperatures and humidity. Working outside in these conditions can be dangerous if you are unprepared. According to ready.gov the highest number of annual weather-related deaths are caused by extreme heat. Extreme heat is described as a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90⁰F for at least two to three days. This causes your body to work harder than usual to maintain a normal temperature. The best way to prevent illness is knowing how to properly prepare for working in the heat and being able to spot the signs of heat illness.

Signs of Heat Related Illness:
· Confusion, altered mental state, slurred speech
· Seizures
· Loss of consciousness
· Very high body temperature
· Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating

Plan Ahead & Prepare When Working in the Heat
1. Check the forecast everyday
2. Hydrate
3. Eat well
4. Dress properly
5. Get rest
