Information for the youth running program this summer:

Monroe Milers is a youth running program with a coaching staff of volunteers and college students. Over 8 weeks, runners will train for the East Avenue Grocery 5K or 1-mile race. They will walk/run in groups of 5-10 runners with 2-3 coaches. Running games are a regular part of practice.

Who can participate: Runners ages 8 and up will train for a 5K race. A young runners group for ages 6 and 7 will train for a 1-mile race. The program is primarily designed for youth who are not on a school cross country or track team.

When and Where: Our first practice is on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Practices are every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Frederick Douglass R-Center (located behind School No. 12) and every Sunday at noon at the Genesee Valley Sports Complex and Ice Rink (131 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14611).

*One Sunday practice at Nazareth College, 4245 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14618

The program will culminate with the East Avenue Grocery Run 5K on November 7, 2026!

Benefits of the Program: Improve physical fitness, make friends, set and work towards a goal, one pair of running shoes per year, a t-shirt, attendance awards, free entry to a 5K or 1-mile race, healthy snacks at the end of each practice.

Expectations of the Runners: Participants are asked to sign an attendance contract, agreeing to miss no more than three practices. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, runners are expected to follow program rules and coaches’ directions. Runners are expected to come with a positive attitude, ready to run. Runners are encouraged to exercise on their own between practices.

Registration fee: $25 per child. Payment will be collected after your registration is confirmed. Scholarships are available. Please contact the volunteer team at [email protected].

Monroe Milers is a Volunteer-Led Organization! Please consider lacing up your shoes and volunteering to coach. Lots of other non-running roles are also available. We could always use extra help! To volunteer, email the volunteer team at [email protected].

Applications will be accepted through September 4. Returning runners will get preferred registration and then all remaining spots will be awarded randomly (not first come first served). We will maintain a waitlist to fill any unexpected openings.

Preparing for a Job Fair
Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind when attending a job fair

1. Find out which employers will be attending. (Done!)

2. Dress as if you were going to an actual job interview... because you are.

3. Don’t smoke before or during the job fair.

4. Bring your own pen. (Bring 2 just in case one dries up)

5. Bring many copies of your resume if you have one, or a copy of your job history in case you need to fill out an application

6. Don’t carry too much stuff with you. Carry your resume in a folder or portfolio. It will keep your resume neat and handy

7. Smile when introducing yourself.

8. If you have someone drive you there, send them away and tell them to come back later so they are not pestering you to leave.

9. Do not bring your children, spouse or other relatives along with you; unless they are job-hunting themselves.

10. Speak with as many representatives as possible. Even if they don’t have exactly what you are looking for today... you never know what positions will open in their company next week.

11. Start with the employers that you are least interested in to become comfortable in the Job Fair setting and work the bugs out of your communication skills.

12. Stand near the tables you want to visit, and eavesdrop on the recruiter and the other applicants. You’ll never have a better opportunity to prepare for an interview.

13. Know when to leave the table. Don’t ramble on about subjects not related to what you are looking for.

14. Be ready with a 60 second commercial about yourself answering the question “Tell me about yourself”.

15. Ask for business cards of the individuals you talk with.

16. Send thank you letters/emails to the representatives you met along with any additional materials you promised to send."
