Bourn & Koch, LLC is a manufacturer of gear-manufacturing machinery, surface grinders and specialty machines for the metal-working industry. Bourn & Koch, Inc.

was founded in 1975 by Larry Bourn & Loyd Koch in Rockford, IL as a remanufacturer and retrofitter of Sundstrand machinery. Since then, they have become an innovator in the gear-manufacturing and machine tool industry. In addition to continuing to build machines that provide useful solutions to companies such as Boeing, Chrysler and Lufkin, Bourn & Koch has acquired numerous American machine tool

companies of yesteryear. They provide OEM support in the form of parts and field service for machine tools such as Bullard, DeVlieg, Mattison and American Tool Works. Bourn & Koch currently occupies the renovated Rockford Machine Tool building on Kishwaukee Street in Rockford, IL. We continue the tradition of American ingenuity, manufacturing and machine tool building while supporting the machines that made American industry possible.

Last Friday, we fired up the grills and enjoyed a company cookout to celebrate all the hard work our team has been putting in! Great food, raffle prizes, and good company made for a fun afternoon.

We also had the privilege of recognizing Loyd for an incredible 50 years with Bourn & Koch. His commitment, knowledge, and contributions have shaped our company over the decades. We wouldn't be here without him! 😉

Management presented Loyd with a handmade machinist's tool chest made from red oak with brass hardware. The top is laser engraved with his patents over his career in the machine tool industry. Inside were mementos from his time at Bourn & Koch, including pieces of Barber-Colman and Fellows history—our first two major machine tool acquisitions—as well as photos from some of our earliest machine projects, longtime team members, and the early days on the Bourn & Koch shop floor.

With the investment of a 3D printer, we can now 3D print certain parts for our machine tools in house. This initiative originated from a Lean Six Sigma cost-savings proposal developed by our Chief Engineer, Syed M. Hasan, focused on identifying machine components that could be produced more efficiently through 3D printing.

After the analysis of the idea was completed, it was determined that the cost savings and reduced lead times justified the investment. The idea was then put into motion with support from the city of Rockford through a grant program. We are now 3D printing 90-100 different types of parts!
