If you know, you know.

That sound still haunts your dreams.

Dozens of plastic recorders.

All playing different notes.

At different times.

At different volumes.

And somehow — all wrong.

The teacher tried her best.

She waved her baton like she was conducting the New York Philharmonic.

But we were just a pack of 8-year-olds, blasting “Hot Cross Buns” like it was a war horn.

No one was on the same beat.

Half the class forgot to cover the holes.

Someone always giggled and squeaked.

It was chaos.

Pure, shrieking chaos.

But man, it was part of growing up.

That little white recorder was a rite of passage.

You’d take it home in your backpack.

Practice for five minutes.

Drive your parents insane.

And then proudly play in the spring concert like it was Carnegie Hall.

Those were the days before tablets and auto-tune.

Before perfect sound and endless distractions.

Just us.

A room full of kids.

And the glorious sound of determination — and maybe a little pain.

Because even though it was terrible, it was real.

And that’s what made it beautiful.
