MEP Coordination Helps Federal Facilities Verify Emergency Shutoff Access Before Handover

An emergency is a poor time to discover that a shutoff valve is behind equipment, or that its label no longer matches the drawings.
For federal facility owners, general contractors, MEP trades, and commissioning teams, the review needs to connect three things:
Location: Does the installed shutoff match the coordinated model and asset record?
Access: Can personnel identify and reach it with equipment, doors, and finishes in place?
Operation: Has the responsible team tested its function and documented what it isolates?
3D laser scanning and as-built BIM can help verify visible locations and surrounding clearances. Functional testing confirms whether the shutoff performs as intended.
Before handover, walk the emergency isolation routes with the people who will operate the facility. Record discrepancies while the construction team can still resolve them.
