With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Bruce Tharpe, who left us peacefully at home on September 23rd at the age of 63.
Those who knew Bruce experienced his warm and generous spirit, while those closer to him cherished his quick, dry wit. The world of R/C flying was not just a hobby for him; it was his passion and his life. His journey began in the Bay Area, where his father introduced him to the hobby. He honed his skills flying full-scale aircraft alongside his dad and went on to earn a degree in Aeronautics from San Jose State University. Bruce had a profound love for designing, building, and flying airplanes.
His dream took shape in 1985 when he joined Sig Manufacturing in Iowa, and it flourished with the founding of BTE in Oregon in 1993. With unwavering support from his parents, Bruce and Sandy Tharpe, he dedicated over 30 years to crafting some of the finest handcrafted kits in the industry. His commitment extended beyond his business; he was a devoted volunteer with the Rogue Eagles R/C Club, the Vintage R/C Society, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics, always ready to lend a helping hand. Recently, he was honored with induction into the AMA Hall of Fame, a recognition he deeply cherished and one he truly deserved.
While Bruce was passionate about his airplanes, nothing compared to his love for his children. His son, now 35, has returned to Southern Oregon with his wife and Bruce's three cherished grandchildren. His daughter, 26, was a frequent visitor and had just moved back in with him a few weeks before his passing. Bruce was a wonderful father who relished outdoor adventures, camping trips, and magical family vacations at Disneyland, surrounded by the love of his family, including Bruce and Sandy, his sister Sue, her husband, and her two daughters.
In a world filled with fleeting moments, Bruce’s legacy of love, generosity, and passion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be profoundly missed.
