Thinking about getting brick pavers? Here's what actually goes into it, so you know what you're paying for before you sign anything.
It's not just laying brick on dirt.

First, we dig. Several inches down, sometimes more depending on whether it's a patio, walkway, or driveway, and what your soil is like.

Then comes the base. Crushed limestone, compacted in layers. This is the part that decides whether your patio still looks good in ten years or starts sinking by year two.

Then sand.

Then the pavers.

Then more sand swept into the joints to lock everything in place.

Then a final compaction so the whole thing settles together.

The brick is the easy part. Most of the work is underground, and that's what separates a patio that holds up from one that turns into a tripping hazard.

A few things worth knowing before you start:
Cheaper quotes usually mean less excavation, thinner base, or skipping the edge restraints. You won't notice until winter does its thing.

Most "brick pavers" today are actually concrete pavers shaped to look like brick. True clay brick exists too, just costs more. Ask which one you're being quoted.
Brick or concrete pavers can be lifted and reset one stone at a time. Stamped concrete cracks, and the repair always shows. That's a real difference.

Color and pattern matter way less than layout. Get the shape and flow right first.

The edge is where a project either holds up or falls apart.

A clean transition between two materials — stone to blacktop, concrete to mulch, paver to turf — isn't a finishing detail. It's a structural one. Done right, it means the base underneath both sides was prepped to the same standard. The pitch lines up so water doesn't pool at the seam. The depth is set so frost doesn't lift it the first Michigan winter. The finishing pass is tight enough that nothing migrates, settles, or separates over time.

There are five things that make the difference between a hardscape that lasts 25 years and one that doesn't.

1) A properly compacted base. The surface is only as stable as what it's built on. The right base depth, compacted for the specific soil conditions on that property, is what keeps everything level and solid over time.

2) Drainage engineered into the grade. Water management starts before anything is installed. A properly graded site moves water away from the structure and the foundation — by design, not by chance.

3) Edge restraints installed correctly. The edges hold the entire field in place. The right product, properly anchored, keeps the surface tight through decades of freeze-thaw cycles.

4) Climate-appropriate jointing material. In Michigan, polymeric sand is the standard for a reason. It locks the joints and holds up through the temperature swings this climate produces every single year.

5) Base depth built for Michigan winters. Freeze-thaw cycles put real stress on anything set into the ground. The base has to account for that — not just meet a generic minimum.
