A Small Part Caused a Big Hydraulic Failure

A mining contractor’s hydraulic cylinder stopped retracting.

What looked like a routine repair turned into a teardown of a much bigger problem. A likely reused piston nut that was not torqued to spec. That one detail brought the equipment to a stop.

It is a good reminder that in hydraulic repair, shortcuts do not stay small for long.

A Hard Lesson in Cylinder Safety

During the installation of a hydraulic steering cylinder, trapped air inside the system caused the piston rod to move unpredictably. As the technician tried to align the rod by hand, it suddenly lunged forward—crushing his hand in the process.

The cause was stick-slip motion (stiction), where static seal friction suddenly gives way to movement once force changes.

The lesson: Always bleed air from hydraulic systems before alignment—and never place hands in pinch points. Safety shortcuts don’t save time. They change lives.
