We were able to hop on a call with Spradow, our test point manufacturer, to learn all about their quality testing processes. During this call, we also got to discuss their deep history. It goes like this...

Their roots go back to the early 20th century when, in 1913, a fittings and metal foundry company was focused on heating and control technology.

Then, in 1966, the Wittler family founded a company that manufactured special-purpose machine systems, including bar feeders, as well as feeding and processing machines.

It all began in 1913 with the founding of the "Hermann Wittler Fittings Factory and Metal Foundry" in Bielefeld. At that time, the company was initially focused on heating and control technology.

Their core business, the high-quality production of hydraulic system measuring accessories, has been operating since the early 1980s.

In 1995, the company moved its main operations and in 2002, the company, "Spradow GmbH & Co. KG" was finally named and founded. In June 2019, Spradow was acquired by Frank Windel.

Today, Spradow continues to offer high-quality test points with many layers of safety and quality assurance from R&D all the way to shipment.

In an article last week, we discussed in-depth the advantages and disadvantages of the three most common hydraulic rotary actuator designs: helical spline, rack-and-pinion, and vane. Today, let's (quickly) talk about where each design is best suited!

➡️ Helical Spline
Compact, heavy-duty applications that require high-power density and low-maintenance, where cost is not the number one factor

➡️ Rack-and-Pinion
Industrial applications that require extremely high torque generation, where weight and design complexity are not important considerations

➡️ Vane
Dynamic applications that require high torque and rotation speed, where moderate maintenance requirements and limited rotation are not an issue

This week in the warehouse, we received a hydraulic clamping unit with a long functional rod. 📏

The Ratio-Clamp® can be sold on its own, attached to a cylinder, or attached to the rod that it will clamp onto. In this case, it is attached to a 60 mm diameter rod with a holding load of 100 kN.

Typically, we see these used by press manufacturers. Many machine builders prefer to get the rod directly from Hänchen to maintain the safety rating. These functional rods have a specific hardness, surface finish, diameter tolerance, and chamfer on the end as well as a material specification that are required to ensure the Ratio-Clamp® can provide its rated holding capacity. This is particularly the case for US manufacturers who may find it difficult sourcing metric rod stock with the correct specifications.

🤔 What you should know about ScanWill Pressure Intensifiers ❓⁉️

We've explored the most common questions about Domin Servo Valves and HYTORC Accessories. Today, we're highlighting a few common questions about the design and capabilities of our intensifiers.

💪 1. What is the maximum pressure intensification?
Our hydraulic intensifiers can yield a maximum outlet pressures of 58,000 psi or 4,000 bar with ratios of up to 16:1. This means that the intensifiers can handle a 16x increase of pressure, depending on your application and system set up.

💧 2. Can pressure intensifiers be used to intensify flow?
No, pressure intensifiers are solely designed to intensify pressure. Pressure intensifiers sacrifice flow for increased pressure and should not be used when needing simultaneously high flow and high-pressure outputs.

⚗️ 3. What kind of filtration requirements do intensifiers need?
Intensifiers have incredibly tight tolerances that they rely on for proper operation. Therefore, they require 10 µm or better filtration.

Last week, we got a large shipment of several hydraulic tool intensifiers! We weren't able to take a photo of the units themselves, because we wanted to get these shipped out as soon as possible to their final destination. 🚚

The size of this shipment is smaller than it would've been a year ago, as ScanWill has redesigned their tool intensifiers to be lighter and more compact to fit the demands of utility crews. Because they are made for large diameter transmission lines where they hang off the sides of utility buckets hundreds of feet in the air, these devices can really benefit from a weight reduction. One common application that we see for our hydraulic intensifiers is pressure testing. Components often need to be tested at standard system pressures over time to validate longevity and performance. In other cases, however, components or machines need to be tested for how much pressure they can tolerate, over time or in short high bursts.

In these applications, pressure intensifiers can boost existing pressure up to 16x, depending on the testing needs. This eliminates full system upgrades and higher capacity pumps, meaning non-standard pressure tests are straightforward and cost-effective.

💪 Heavy loads held on vertical axes pose a threat if a failure were to occur. In the event of a power loss, technical error, or damaged hydraulic line, the weight of the machinery could cause damage to the system or, worse, people working on the press or in the surrounding area.

To prevent this from happening, it is crucial that a safety device is installed as a fail-safe. These are the exact applications that the safety catcher was designed for.

In one specific use case (pictured), the safety catcher is used on a hydraulic press as a precautionary measure to prevent sinking or falling. In the case of a sudden loss of pressure, it utilizes a self-energizing principle as it moves downwards, generating the holding force necessary to lock it in place.

Having a specific safety mechanism in place ensures that if something happens out of your control, everyone is protected. 🛡️
