INTRODUCING DFI SECOND SHIFT.

We make a lot of stuff around here.

Which means we also end up with a lot of these little plastic hardware cases after they’ve done the job they originally came here to do.

They’re still perfectly useful.

So instead of tossing them, we decided to put them back to work.

Welcome to DFI Second Shift.

Second Shift is a new line of compact organizers built around upcycled cases from our own production process, paired with removable 3D-printed inserts designed around the small stuff that always seems to need a better home.

And the first lineup is officially LIVE:

🔋 SS001AA
16 AA Battery Organizer

🔋 SS001AAA
8 AA + 10 AAA Battery Organizer

🔫 SS007
Ammo Cartridge Organizer

🛠️ SS000-C
Custom Organizer

But those are just the first shift.

We’re already working on organizers for camera batteries, SD cards, SSDs, hard drives, trading cards, business cards, stickers, small electronics, tools, hardware, and whatever other weird assortment of pocket-sized stuff you’ve been trying to keep together.

And that’s probably the part I’m most excited about.

Second Shift is meant to keep growing.

If there’s something you want organized, send us exactly what you’re trying to store and the dimensions of each item. If it fits inside one of our Mini, Standard, or Maxi cases, there’s a pretty good chance we can design something around it.

Every reused case is cleaned, inspected, and stripped of its original labels before it leaves the shop again.

Will every box look factory-new?

Nope.

Some may have a little haze, a light scratch, a tiny bit of sticker residue, or some other cosmetic evidence that they already punched the clock once before.

That’s the point.

♻️ Same box. New job. Second Shift.

The first four are available now:

And seriously, tell us in the comments:

What small stuff do YOU need help organizing?

The weirder the answer, the better.

Yesterday was the last day of the semester in the Piedmont Community College gunsmithing program (Piedmont Gunsmithing Association), and I got to work on my CZ 712 G2 Utility.

I bought this sh***un from a pawn shop in Thomasville about eight years ago, and it has never cycled reliably. I never had the time, knowledge, or funds to properly fix it until now.

The issue came down to a seized extractor detent. It was stuck badly enough that we had to drill and mill it out carefully to avoid damaging the bolt.

I turned a replacement detent by hand on the lathe from a tiny scrap piece of stainless steel to help prevent future rust and seizing. We also replaced the spring while we were in there.

Most people will never see that work when they handle the gun.

I’ll know it’s there.

With a little extra shop time left over, I also started making a comically oversized bolt handle from a scrapped action wrench bolt. Mostly for “you-know-what and giggles”.

It was fun because it required an offset cut on the lathe. Turning that was scary, but satisfying. Big thanks to Lennie for showing me how to set it up safely on the 4 jaw and keep it from becoming shop shrapnel.

This bolt handle isn’t done yet— it still needs the sides milled flat and the attachment cutouts made before it is finished.

It is ridiculously oversized.
It is gaudy.
It looks like it belongs on a hammer drill.

But it is mine, and I learned a lot making it.

Small parts. Careful fitting. Useful lessons.

Spent the weekend down at the Southern Side by Side at deepriversportingclays.

Proud to represent Piedmont Community College and the Piedmont Gunsmithing Association. Talked shop with guys who’ve been around fine guns longer than I have and got a look at what “finished” actually looks like at the high end.

Prices ranged from roughly “more than my truck” to “probably more than my house.”

Fit, finish, balance — all intentional.
Hand-cut engraving that actually flows.

These were all heirloom pieces. Gorgeous hand-engraved details and stocks finished by expert, seasoned artisans. Absolute masters of the craft.

Work to aspire to.

Got out on the course with the guys and busted a few clays too. These old guns still shoot, and they still break plenty of birds.

Came home with an ithacagunco 1½ Grade side-by-side with Damascus barrels — one of my school projects going forward. Looking forward to diving into a restoration over a hundred years in the making.

Good weekend.
