Dear valued customers,
With the extremely cold temperatures expected across North Carolina this weekend, we wanted to share a few quick steps you can take to help protect your HVAC system (Take these steps ONLY during ICY conditions) and avoid unnecessary damage.
What we recommend:
🧊 Switch your thermostat to Emergency Heat (Auxiliary Heat).
This prevents your outdoor unit from running in freezing conditions.
🧊Cover your exterior HVAC unit with plastic or plywood to help keep ice and freezing rain out of the system.
Make sure each thermostat is set to emergency or auxiliary setting before covering the outside units.
As soon as the precipitation passes, you will be able to uncover and return to normal heat settings.
🚨🚨 NOTE: If you have a large portable or whole-home generator, the above method may not work. It depends on whether the generator was wired to run ONLY the outside heat pump or BOTH the heat pump and emergency heat.
If your generator is wired to only run your heat pump, leave your HVAC on the regular heat settings and DO NOT cover it.
After an ice storm, we often have many people with broken fan blades and burnt motors from ice buildup. We hope this helps save our customers from unexpected costs.
Pritchard Heating and Cooling will be available for emergency service calls throughout the weekend (please call ONLY for extreme emergencies, as the office has been inundated). Please keep in mind, however, that if your home loses power, there is unfortunately nothing that can be done to the unit until power is restored.
If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help you stay warm and protect your system.
Stay safe and warm,
Pritchard Heating and Cooling
