Even this gang of Killington turkeys was happy that the culverts were finished. This project involved two "Aluminum Structural Plate Arches" to convey a stream underneath East Mountain Road and Trailside Drive which were damaged during the July 2023 flooding. Mosher Excavating's crew did another good job.

Construction of the Regional Ambulance’s new West Rutland location is marching forward. This week a 6 inch waterline was installed that required cutting through the old 10 inch thick concrete roadbed that exists underneath the asphalt. Not everyday there are 3 excavator buckets operating at once, but shutting down Main Street also doesn’t happen everyday.

Wildcat Road in Chittenden handles a steady stream of locals and visitors accessing Leffert’s Pond, trail networks, and camps. A culvert put in some decades ago from salvaged pieces of penstock pipe (likely from the Chittenden Reservoir pipeline) began to separate at the joint as seen in this photo.

The replacement pipe adheres to the current standards for stream crossings. The old design methods would provide a pipe that can simply handle the stream’s hydraulic flow, but research has shown that these pipes are not as resilient during large storm events and also degrade the habitat. The current design and regulatory standards (which come with increased cost) provide for a natural bottom for aquatic organism passage and are sized for the “bank full width”. The bank full width is basically matching the pipe width to the stream’s natural width and not creating a funnel where the culvert is narrower than the stream (more vulnerable during a flood).

Project could not have been successful without Jan Sotirakis from the Town of Chittenden and Champlain Construction of Middlebury.

In 2019, public water systems throughout Vermont were tested for contamination with PFOA/PFAS compounds. This contamination often stems from the use or manufacturing of industrial products such waterproof fabrics, fire-fighting foam, ski wax, floor wax, and thousands of other products.

Many wells in Killington were found to be contaminated and exceeded the State maximum contaminant level. Since that time Enman Kesselring has assisted several Killington hotels with the regulatory implications, development of alternative options, design, and permitting of solutions to address the issue and return their wells to potable use. Many of these projects require Granulated Activated Carbon treatment systems to remove the PFAS and PFOA from the drinking water. One such project is wrapping up construction, and here is a photograph of the primary treatment system. The property was also in need of replacement reservoir tanks, which are show in the other photograph.

The project involved collaboration with Waite Heindel Environmental Management, Culligan Water Technologies, and Champlin Associates.
