Happy 251 years to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters! 🌟

Today we celebrate our 251st anniversary!

George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775, during the American Revolution, and engineers have served in combat in all subsequent American wars. The Army established the Corps of Engineers as a separate, permanent branch on March 16, 1802, and gave the engineers responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Since then the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has responded to changing defense requirements and played an integral part in the development of the country. Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army Engineer Regiment, and thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts for the Nation.

If you are near one of our recreation sites, today we are also waiving day use fees at more than 2,800 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide: https://www.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Releases/News-Release-Article-View/Article/4512066/us-army-corps-of-engineers-waives-day-use-fees-at-recreation-areas-in-observanc/

It feels like just yesterday this 14-person cohort was walking the halls of a local elementary school leading STEM activities during National Engineers Week. Today, they are officially graduates of the Leadership Development Program II!

Over a rigorous seven months, they’ve sharpened their communication, tackled complex real-world challenges, and given back to the community.

Congrats, graduates! 🎉

We recently met with Lower San Joaquin River Project partners to review potential design options for the authorized closure gate structure at Fourteen Mile Slough – a critical feature intended to reduce flood risk in north and central Stockton, California.

Bringing technical teams and contracting agencies together in one setting allowed real-time collaboration and problem-solving that helps streamline coordination, reduce extended review timelines, and keep project development moving forward efficiently.

Continued coordination among , California Department of Water Resources, City of Stockton - Government, San Joaquin Area Flood Control Agency, and HDR-GEI Joint Venture, remains essential as the project advances into the next phase of development.

Take a look at how our sandbag operators train on the sandbagging machine.

The sandbag machine is an efficient asset during emergency operations when sandbags are needed quickly at a higher volume.

Watch as Greg Jerman and Josh Harris speak to their day in training and the importance of having a strong team of sandbag operators.

May 31 is National Dam Safety Awareness Day. We own and operate 17 dams throughout California (swipe through to see which one you are based on your birthday). Our dams provide multiple benefits including flood risk management, navigation, water supply, hydropower, environmental stewardship, fish and wildlife conservation, and recreation but none are risk free.

Dam safety programs, like the one from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, support federal, state, and local stakeholders responsible for dams monitor them and follow best safety practices. USACE dams avoid over $250 billion in direct damages and preserve $25 billion annually in economic benefits. Specifically, Sacramento District’s Dam infrastructure help to protect over 24 million people and support over $48 billion in flood risk reduction benefits in Central California.

We’re continuing to make progress around Folsom Lake! D**e 6, which connects to trails such as Beals to Granite Bay Multi-use Trail and the Pioneer Express Trail, has evolved over the last 8 months. Check out these photos to see the difference!

D**e 6 is one of the 8 dikes around Folsom Lake being raised 3.5 feet to improve flood risk management for the Greater Sacramento Area and one of the many ways we’re ‘building infrastructure, not paperwork.’
