I read "Guns Germs and Steel the Fates of Human Societies" by Jared Diamond a few months ago. It was both an Aventis Best Science and Pulitzer Prize winning book with a theory for why Europeans survived in the New World and Native Americans were wiped out. Europeans acquired dangerous pathogens to which they built acquired immunity through natural selection. A larger denser population and more domestic animals in Europe were the source of their acquired immunity.
