V-667 rolled out of our St. Amant shop this week. 43 feet long and almost 10 feet across.
Here is the part that surprises people. All that steel weighs 39,000 pounds.
But when this vessel is finally standing in service, it will weigh over 200,000 pounds. The corrosion resistant lining that goes inside it weighs about 101,000 pounds on its own, roughly two and a half times more than the steel we built. Another 61,000 pounds of packing goes in after that.
So the shell we shipped is less than 20 percent of the final weight. The plate is 1/2 inch to 7/8 inch thick, and almost none of that is for the pressure inside. It is there to carry 50 tons of brick, hurricane wind, and earthquake loads for the next few decades.
Every bit of it was built here. Engineering and code calculations, fabrication & welding of the shell, manways and nozzles, ladders, platforms and grating, the lift trunnions, blasting and coating, and even the steel saddles it is sitting on for the ride.
Then it takes a team beyond our gate. The lining contractor, the heavy haul crew, and the client, all lined up months in advance so a load this size leaves the yard on schedule and gets where it is going in one piece.
