Interpretation of Smoke Impact on Grapes is Evolving Science-

Wildfires can have a devastating impact on vineyards, but each fire is a unique event, and we learn from every one. Distance from the fire, duration of smoke contact, fuel source, and the metabolic status of the vines all influence the degree of impact. Interpretation is further complicated by the fact that some varietals—including Pinot Noir—naturally contain low levels of several compounds associated with wildfire smoke, even in grapes with no smoke exposure. This was the case with the 2026 Woodside fire on California’s North Coast, which caused varying levels of smoke impact across affected vineyards. Because these naturally occurring compounds can appear at varying concentrations in non-impacted grapes, they complicate efforts to interpret smoke marker analysis for vines exposed to low smoke levels. The 2026 Harvest Guide Addendum provides two case studies to show how these naturally occurring compounds can make it difficult to interpret results from smoke marker analysis.
