Scientists just created a solar cell achieving 47% efficiency — nearly double the best silicon panels available today. This single breakthrough could cut the cost of solar electricity in half worldwide.

The perovskite-silicon tandem cell developed by Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin stacks two light-absorbing layers that capture different portions of the solar spectrum simultaneously. The top perovskite layer absorbs high-energy blue and green photons while the bottom silicon layer captures lower-energy red and infrared photons that pass straight through perovskite. By harvesting photons across a much wider energy range than either material alone, the tandem structure converts 47% of incoming sunlight to electricity compared to 22% for the best commercial silicon panels currently sold. The theoretical maximum for this tandem architecture reaches 53%, suggesting further improvement remains possible.

The previous world record for any solar cell was 39.5% achieved under concentrated light in laboratory conditions. This 47% result was measured under standard test conditions matching real-world sunlight intensity, making it the most practically relevant solar efficiency ever demonstrated. Production cost per watt of generated electricity for perovskite cells is projected at 40% lower than silicon manufacturing costs at equivalent production scale, because perovskite materials can be deposited from liquid solution at room temperature rather than requiring the 1,400-degree silicon purification processes that dominate current panel manufacturing energy and cost.

German manufacturer Meyer Burger has licensed the technology for commercial production beginning in 2026.

Production is back in full swing at our Georgia factories!

After a temporary customs clearance pause, our Dalton and Cartersville factories are back to normal production, with respective teams doing what they do best: the clean energy infrastructure America needs.

As our Head of Communications, Marta Stoepker, noted today: “We are excited to welcome hundreds of new, talented people into our workforce as we finalize our one-of-a-kind factory in Cartersville, Georgia. By the end of 2026, we’ll have nearly 4,000 people manufacturing components America hasn’t made in a very long time.”

Together, we’re continuing to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and help power America’s clean energy future.

⚠️Here’s some important information in terms of snow removal:⚠️

•Don’t wait until Monday morning to remove snow/sleet.
•First round of shoveling should occur around noon-1pm.
•Second round of shoveling should be around 4/5pm.
•Sleet will likely be infiltrating the area around dinner time. (Possibly earlier).
•You don’t want all that snow, sleet, potential freezing rain/Ice to sit all night and maybe a little bit more snow Monday morning on top of that and then try and remove Monday. It will be a massive block of Ice! 🧊

Obviously as the storm gets going, we will be tracking that sleet line and let you know when it’s arriving. We are sticking with our forecast from Thursday night for now. However… trends are a bit warmer, so it’s possible that, that over a foot number may be an issue. However… We proud that we have been able to hold onto our forecast for so long, especially being one of the only outlets with having a number as low as 6” with this storm due to the threat of sleet. Many have changed their forecast multiple times.
