These historic photos capture Midwest Electric linemen communicating over the radio and gathering for a tailgate safety meeting before beginning their work. While today’s technology looks a little different, the purpose remains exactly the same: clear communication, careful planning, and making sure everyone goes home safely.

Every job begins with a conversation. By reviewing the day’s work, identifying potential hazards, and working together as a team, our crews continue a tradition that has been part of Midwest Electric for generations.

Ninety years later, the commitment to safety and teamwork is just as strong.

Bluelick & Rockport: Alpha Utility Services, a contractor for Midwest Electric, will be conducting pole inspections in your area. You may see their trucks or UTV in the area. This process includes walking around the poles, digging around them, and hammering and drilling into the poles.

Please note that our contractors may need to access your property to reach these poles and equipment.

Pole testing is conducted annually to ensure our members receive reliable electric service. Midwest Electric tests all distribution poles on a 10-year cycle. Any poles that do not meet strength and safety standards will be replaced, and an additional preservative treatment will be applied to those that require it.

Safety has always been at the heart of what we do.

These photos from a pole top rescue training in the 1960s remind us that preparing for the unexpected has long been part of the job. While equipment, techniques, and training have evolved over the years, Midwest Electric’s commitment to keeping our employees safe has never changed.

Earlier this summer, our linemen completed this year’s pole top rescue training, continuing a tradition that spans generations. Regular hands-on training ensures our employees are prepared to respond quickly and safely in emergency situations.

For 90 years, safety has been more than a priority—it’s been a core value.
