The customer said 45 degrees Celsius. The analysis said 39.

Six degrees is a long way in tissue. Once you run the error budget, the tolerance stack, and the safety margins on the sensing technology they had chosen, controlling to 45 meant occasionally exceeding it. So the control target came down, and their clinical protocol changed with it.

Finding that early was the whole ballgame. Saying "sure, 45, no problem" would have been a bad outcome for everyone.
