Sometimes I think the post office get paid by how many miles a package can have on it before it get delivered. Lol just the other day it was in my town and now it's in Georgia.

Back in the early 1960's reaching 200 mph was the number every Top Fuel racer talked about, and plenty of people said a dragster would never reach it in a quarter mile. Speeds were climbing fast but the last few miles per hour before 200 seemed impossible to find.

On August 2, 1964, at Island Dragway Don Garlits found them. Driving his Swamp Rat VI-B, the car known as the Wynn’s Jammer. When the timers lit up, the speed read 201.34 mph. It is recognized as the first official 200 mph pass under NHRA sanction.

Garlits was not the only one chasing the number, and the arguments started almost immediately. Chris Karamesines and Connie Kalitta both laid claim to 200 mph runs of their own, and some still debate whether Garlits himself had gotten there earlier in Illinois. At the 1964 Nationals in Indianapolis, Kalitta made a 200.00 mph pass, the first 200 mph run at an NHRA national event. But the Island Dragway run is the one that went into the history books as NHRA’s first.

Garlits went on to win many more races and become known simply as “Big Daddy,” but that summer of 1964 remains one of the moments that defined him.
