𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗡’𝗧 𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗢𝗨𝗧.

For many stainless steel components, the foundry isn't producing the final geometry. It's producing the material that the machine shop has to turn into it.

That makes machining considerations part of the casting process from the beginning.

Stainless grades can work-harden during machining, generate significant cutting forces, and be less forgiving of interrupted cuts than many common carbon steels. On a casting, those challenges can become even more important when the machinist is dealing with varying section thicknesses, as-cast surfaces, large diameters, deep bores, or critical sealing areas.

That's why machining stock can't simply be treated as "extra metal."

Too little allowance can leave insufficient material to clean up a surface. Too much means unnecessary machining time, tooling wear, and cost. Where that stock is placed matters just as much as how much is added.

Some of the most complex features of a casting disappear completely once the part is finished.

Internal passages, cavities, and other geometry can require carefully designed cores to create shapes that would be difficult, or sometimes impractical, to machine after the casting is poured.

And getting that internal geometry right requires more than simply making the correct core.

The foundry has to account for how the core will be positioned and supported, how metal will flow around it, how it will behave during pouring and solidification, and how the core material will ultimately be removed from the finished casting.

When tolerances are tight or internal geometry becomes increasingly complex, every one of those considerations becomes more important.

The customer may never see the core that made the part possible.

But they'll absolutely see the results if it wasn't done right.
