Reaveley Engineers

Reaveley Engineers We are the strength behind your vision. Reaveley Engineers was founded in April 1972 by Ronald J. Reaveley, S.E. as a full service structural engineering firm.

"If it can be imagined, we will find a way to design it." This attitude over the years has led Reaveley Engineers to a large portfolio of successful and technically unique projects

Utah Valley University's Sorenson Student Center, which houses a print, shipping, and receiving center, underwent phased reconstruction over 18 months to expand dining areas, improve circulation, update the bookstore, add a Starbucks franchise, and renovate key student service spaces, including the campus post office.

Such projects require careful coordination among student services, retail, logistics, gathering spaces, and daily campus operations to ensure the building remains welcoming and easy to navigate.

Today, the UVU Sorenson Student Center remains one of the campus's most active hubs, supporting daily experiences that connect students to the university and to each other.

In collaboration with method studio.

Deseret Peak High School was envisioned as more than a place for classrooms. Working alongside VCBO Architecture, the team set out to create a learning environment that reflects how students learn, collaborate, and connect today while remaining adaptable for generations to come.

That vision challenged every member of the project team. The building's dramatic geometry, expansive glass, soaring commons, and signature "nest" overlooking a three-story gathering space all required structural solutions that could support the architecture without compromising its intent.

With 260 tilt-up concrete panels, some approaching 80 feet tall, the structure does more than support the building. It helps create spaces filled with daylight, encourages connection, and gives students an environment that feels inspiring, welcoming, and built for the future.

A recent Utah Construction & Design Magazine feature highlighted the collaboration, creativity, and long-term thinking behind the project, from its distinctive architectural character to the spaces designed to support future generations of learners.

We're grateful to collaborate with VCBO Architecture, Tooele County School District, Hughes General Contractors, and the entire project team on a school that invests not only in education, but in the future of the Tooele community.

This question guided the renovation and new addition connecting The University of Utahโ€™s Widtsoe and LeRoy E. Cowles Buildings. Built in 1901 and 1967, each building has its own history, character, and structure.

The project did more than just connect the buildings. It made it easier to move between departments, improved accessibility, reinforced the old structures, and added space for todayโ€™s academic needs. These include better classrooms, new graduate study areas, more faculty offices, a new auditorium, and the Intermountain Healthcare Simulation Learning Center. Now, the buildings form a more unified academic center that supports research, hands-on learning, and collaboration across different fields.

It's a question more architects, universities, and owners are beginning to ask as transportation habits evolve and long-term flexibility becomes increasingly important.

We're honored that the Utah State University Canyon View Terrace Parking Structure received an ACEC Utah Engineering Excellence Award.

What makes this project especially meaningful is that the team challenged several assumptions about how parking structures are traditionally designed.

Working alongside Elliott Workgroup and Jacobsen Construction, we developed a hybrid steel and post-tensioned concrete system that replaced large concrete walls with open braced frames, used slender steel columns instead of bulky supports, and created a brighter, more transparent structure with improved visibility and safety.

Those decisions helped support the architect's vision, accelerated construction, and reduced seismic demands. They also created something owners increasingly value: flexibility.

Whether we're designing housing, academic buildings, or parking structures, the same principle applies. Buildings that are open, adaptable, and thoughtfully planned tend to serve their communities longer and more effectively than buildings designed around a single moment in time.

We're grateful to ACEC Utah for the recognition and to Utah State University, Utah DFCM, Elliott Workgroup, Jacobsen Construction, and the entire project team for helping push the conversation forward.

The James T. Park Building at The University of Utah demonstrates how existing campus facilities can be strengthened, modernized, and adapted for future research and instruction.

Seismic reinforcements, infrastructure upgrades, and renovated instructional spaces create a safer, more flexible academic environment for students, faculty, and researchers. Updated classrooms, offices, and labs support interdisciplinary needs while maintaining the buildingโ€™s role in the universityโ€™s science district.

We sincerely thank MJSA Architects, Big-D Construction Midwest, the University of Utah, and the entire project team for their collaboration on a facility that will serve students and faculty for years to come.

As fun as the build is, the best part has been the people. The relationships we build with our collaborators, our clients, and our community are what make the work meaningful, and events like this are a good reminder of that.

At our Salt Lake headquarters, conference rooms are named after Utah canyons, but in our Boise office, one is called Russet. The idea sounded a little half-baked at first, until clients started asking: "Did a potato just accept my meeting invite?" At that point, the name had pretty much taken root.

Engineering is serious work, but office culture doesn't always have to be.

On International Day of Potato, Reaveley's yielding respect for the russet.

The seismic upgrade and renovation of The University of Utah's Kingsbury Hall helped preserve one of Salt Lake Cityโ€™s most well-known performing arts venues. Since it opened in 1930, Kingsbury Hall has welcomed generations to concerts, lectures, theater, dance, commencements, and cultural events.

The renovation focused on both preserving the building and improving its long-term use. Upgrades included seismic improvements, air conditioning, better seating, larger restrooms, a movable orchestra platform, new dressing and practice rooms, improved lobby and plaza spaces, and a much bigger stage for modern performances.

When working with historic venues, structural engineering is about more than just making buildings stronger. It means helping these places move forward while honoring the character that people already know and appreciate.
