Part 1: Shower Leak Gone Wrong đźšżđź’§
This project started out simple — the homeowners noticed some cracked grout and tile separation around their shower bench, so they gave us a call.
The plan was to remove the glass, demo the bench tile, and lift the slab on top to check for water damage.
But once we opened it up, things got interesting.
The shower was only about seven years old, and there was no waterproofing on the bench at all. Over time, water had caused some serious hidden damage.
We started by removing the shower pan, curb, and one row of tile up the wall… but the more we opened, the worse it got. Moisture had spread all the way to the middle of the bathroom floor, so we ended up removing all the floor tile too.
Then we found that water had wicked up the Triton board on the walls, turning about 2½ feet of it into mush. At that point, we had no choice but to demo all the shower wall tile and the tub face outside the shower.
We really felt for the homeowners and tried to save what we could, but this job was a big reminder of how important proper prep and waterproofing are. Even a slow leak can do major damage over time — and since it was gradual, insurance wouldn’t cover it.
Stay tuned for Part 2 to see how we rebuilt this bathroom the right way. đź’Ş
