VHS Outdoor Living Creating beautiful outdoor spaces is our specialty. If it lives outside, we build it to last. Chris Verme, our founder, was born and raised in San Antonio.

Our expert team will work with you every step of the way to bring your vision to life with artistic design and quality craftsmanship. He’s always loved being outdoors, growing things, building things, and turning spaces into something beautiful. In 1996, he started VHS with a mower, a shovel, and a mission to help his neighbors care for their yards. What began as simple landscape maintenance quickly grew. By 1999, VHS became a full-service landscaping company. Today, we offer everything from landscape design to decks and fences, rainwater harvesting, generators, sheds, plunge pools, and complete outdoor transformations. While the company has grown, our values haven’t changed. Chris is still hands-on, and he still believes in doing things the right way the first time. That same commitment to quality runs through every crew member, many of whom have been with us for years. We work with experienced craftspeople who take pride in their work. We use trusted materials, proven processes. Whether you're building an outdoor kitchen or reimagining your entire yard, VHS makes it easier. We're your one-stop outdoor contractor so you don’t have to juggle vendors or manage the details alone. We’re proud to serve the San Antonio area and proud of every project we leave behind.

A pool is only part of the project. The patio, drainage, plantings, and lighting around it matter too.

Chris asked Jason from Denali Pools what he liked most about working with us. He said it was knowing the customer would be taken care of by a team with real experience. Not every contractor follows through on what they promise. That part we take seriously.

What would you add around your new pool first: shade, a patio, or plants?

Fire pit season is officially here. A round gravel fire pit area, a ring of pavers, and a few bright Adirondack chairs, with a stepping-stone path leading right to it. Simple, comfortable, and exactly where everyone ends up once the sun goes down.

A modern Hill Country home deserves an outdoor space to match.

These homeowners wanted a clean, modern look, and we found some smart ways to get there without spending more than necessary.

We used stained and stamped concrete to get the look of custom tile at a lower cost. And instead of ordering a pergola kit online, we built a custom steel pergola that fits the space perfectly for about the same price.

We also coordinated with Denali Pools to make sure the new pool and surrounding spaces worked together, added raised vegetable beds, and tackled some serious drainage challenges caused by runoff from the higher neighboring property.

A lot of planning went into this one, including plenty of work you can’t see. But that’s what makes the finished space work as good as it looks.

Nobody’s saving gutter inspiration, but this stuff matters.

We added gutters to collect rainwater from the roof and direct it into the underground drainage system instead of letting it pour into the yard and toward the pool.

Not the most exciting part of the project, but one of the reasons everything else works.

Western red cedar is a great choice for a pergola because it holds up well outdoors and can last for years with the right care.

We used a solid stain instead of paint. It gives you that clean, finished look while soaking into the wood instead of sitting on top like paint, which means less peeling and a finish that’s easier to maintain over time.

Some of the most important work in a backyard is the work you never see.

This property sits below the neighboring yard, so runoff would have been pushed straight toward the new pool. We added gutters, catch, basins, strip drains, walls, and underground piping to carry the water beneath the pool area and safely out to the natural area behind the property.

The drainage may be hidden now, but it was a big part of making this backyard work.
