Today we're wrapping up on converting this 1950s built-up gravel roof (BUR) to a laminated dimensional shingle roof. Removal (spudding) the BUR down to the wood deck removed the significant weight of the aggregate and bitumen materials (gravel and tar), and allowed us to install a shingle roof with a superior curb appeal. In addition to installing a new laminated shingle roof, our customer asked us to install new fiber cement fascia, and siding under the overhang to close the open soffit area. We recently completed a roof replacement on a beautiful older home with a mix of shingled and flat roofing. While removing of the old roof, we discovered a layer of original cedar shingles and open sheathing that required replacement. We documented the issue, and the insurance carrier approved the upgrades. When replacing your roof, make sure the contractor tears off the old roof down to the decking. It's the only way to evaluate the condition of your roof deck and make any necessary repairs.
