On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, marking a turning point in World War II.

Today, we take a moment to reflect on their courage, their sacrifice, and the cost of freedom.

Their legacy endures—and we remember.

In April 1913, aviation pioneers gathered in San Francisco to celebrate a brand-new era: powered flight. The Pacific Aero Club banquet brought together the innovators, builders, and early pilots who helped shape aviation in its earliest days.

Many of those names live on today, etched into history, and even here at the museum, reminding us how bold and experimental those first years of flight truly were.

From formal dinners to fragile flying machines, this was a community driven by curiosity, risk, and a shared belief that humans could take to the skies.

Before it became the FH-1100, this helicopter was pushing the limits of what was possible

Originally developed from the experimental Hiller Ten99, the Model 1100 brought turbojet power into the mix—delivering a major leap in performance. It even outflew its competition during the U.S. Army’s 1961 Light Observation Helicopter trials. While it didn’t win the final contract, its story didn’t end there.

Certified for civilian use and produced as the Fairchild Hiller FH-1100, it went on to serve in the real world, marking the final helicopter design from aviation pioneer Stanley Hiller Jr.

A true underdog with impressive capability:
• Seats 5 (pilot + 4 passengers)
• Cruise speed: 110 knots
• Range: 300 nautical miles

Innovation, competition, and legacy—all in one aircraft.

On May 21, 2026, Ampaire flew the hybrid-electric aircraft Electric EEL into San Carlos Airport as part of the continued advancement of practical electric aviation.

Ampaire modified this aircraft by replacing the forward combustion engine with an all-electric propulsion system powered by batteries housed in the aircraft’s belly pod, while retaining the aft combustion engine. Together, the systems operate as a hybrid-electric aircraft designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining the utility and range of conventional aviation.

In hybrid-electric configuration, this aircraft has flown more than 30,000 miles, including operations and demonstrations in Hawaii, Scotland, Alaska, Canada, and across the United States.

It is part of the early generation of hybrid-electric aircraft helping pioneer the future of sustainable aviation.
