Today, I was reminded of something important.
Most days in construction are measurements, schedules, materials, deadlines, permits, invoices, and production. We move from one project to the next, focused on solving problems and getting the job done right.
But every once in a while, a project becomes something more.
Every once in a while, you meet someone who reminds you why you started doing this work in the first place.
Recently, I had the privilege of working with a homeowner whose kindness, grace, and genuine character left a lasting impression on me. Without sharing any personal details, she reminded me that behind every address, every proposal, and every project is a human being with a story.
A person with hopes, worries, challenges, victories, family, and life happening around them while we are there painting walls, installing floors, or remodeling a room.
As contractors, we are invited into people's homes during some of the most personal moments of their lives. That trust should never be taken lightly.
This experience reminded me that our job is bigger than construction.
Yes, we build and repair homes.
But we also have the opportunity to bring comfort, reassurance, respect, and kindness into the lives of the people who live in them.
To my fellow contractors and industry professionals: never forget that the work is important, but the people are more important. Take a few extra minutes to listen. Treat people with patience. Lead with compassion. You may never know what someone is carrying behind the scenes.
To homeowners: thank you for trusting us with your homes, your projects, and often a small piece of your lives.
And to this particular homeowner, thank you for the reminder.
If there were a place for contractors to leave reviews for customers, this one would be easy.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
10 stars as a customer.
20 stars as a human being.
Moments like these remind me that the best part of this business has never been the projects.
It's the people.
